House's failure to pass gun bill endangers Americans and Mexicans alike (Latina Lista)
http://www.latinalista.net/palabrafinal/2011/02/houses_failure_to_pass_gun_bill_endanger.html

LatinaLista -- If there is one universal truth about guns, it's that they are seen as tools of violence. It doesn't matter if the gun is used for sport or crime; the instrument itself, separated from the intent of the shooter, is still considered a weapon of destruction.

If that weren't the case then we wouldn't still be reading stories of young elementary school students being suspended from classes just because they created a gun with their fingers.

It's just understood that guns are violent -- and deadly in the wrong hands, as we saw with what happened in the Tucson shooting and what we continually hear from Mexico as drug cartels use guns to murder their victims on a daily basis.

It's ironic that in a country like Mexico, where it's illegal to buy firearms, that recently a United States ICE agent met his death at the end of a gun barrel that was most probably bought in the United States.

1. Most likely the ICE officer was shot by a military only weapon the US sold to the Mexican
Government

3. Lies, lies and more lies.
Lets start with "It's ironic that in a country like Mexico, where it's illegal to buy firearm"

This is a lie.
Not surprising you'd cite it though.

The nation of Mexico, and it's citizens, allow ownership of arms that are not generally in use by the military, and they have a license for firearms.

Article 10: The inhabitants of the United Mexican States have a right to arms in their homes, for security and legitimate defense, with the exception of arms prohibited by federal law and those reserved for the exclusive use of the Army, Navy, Air Force and National Guard. Federal law will determine the cases, conditions, requirements, and places in which the carrying of arms will be authorized to the inhabitants.

8. "It's just understood that guns are violent"
No, it's NOT "just understood". That's what one does when one has no facts to back up one's argument. One simply declares that this is the way it is, and EVERYONE agrees with it.

Yup.

My gun is not violent.

My gun is not lazy.

My gun is not ill-tempered.

My gun is not depressed.

My gun is not jumping for joy.

A gun is an inanimate object. It is a tool. It is folly to ascribe human emotions to inanimate objects.

9. The lack of research makes one's head spin.
The bill would simply have required the 8,500 gun dealers near the U.S.-Mexico border to alert authorities when they sell within five consecutive business days two or more semiautomatic rifles "greater than .22 caliber with detachable magazines" -- the very guns that are a favorite of Mexican drug cartels.

When you construct a category that includes the vast majority of centerfire rifles on the civilian market, and define "bulk sale" as "two guns sold to two people in an entire week" then duh, your rule is going to get slapped down, because it is ridiculous on its face. It appears there was no attempt whatsoever to tailor this rule to be anything other than blanket registration of most rifle sales; even the handgun reporting rules are far, far more tailored than that.

10. Which begs the question: WHY are we suspending elementary school students...
...who are playing an innocent game of Cops & Robbers with each other? We are becoming a nation of milquetoasts.
