Firearm registration and taxation bill proposed in New York Senate |
|
REPRINTED IN ITS ENTIRETY WITH PERMISSION http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Read.aspx?ID=6312Gun Registration and Ownership Tax Introduced in the New York Senate Thursday, February 24, 2011
Please contact members of the Senate Codes Committee!
A bill has been introduced in the New York Senate that would require gun owners to register all of their firearms. Senate Bill 2994 has been referred to the Senate Codes Committee, but currently no hearing date has been set.
Sponsored by state Senator Eric Adams (D-20), S. 2994 would require firearms to be registered with a $15 per gun fee. An additional $10 would be charged annually for renewal. This registration legislation would require gun owners to list the serial number and model of every gun they own, in addition to personal information. Gun owners know that criminals will never register their illegally possessed guns and, in fact, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Haynes v. U.S. (309 U.S. 85 (1968)) that since felons are prohibited from owning firearms, compelling them to register their guns would violate their Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination. In addition, this ill-conceived legislation would constitute a substantial state tax on gun ownership. Historically, these failed registration schemes have also been very costly for jurisdictions to maintain, and they have been completely ineffective. Registration is a dangerous step toward confiscation and an assault on the Second Amendment.
Please contact members of the Senate Codes Committee and respectfully ask them to oppose S. 2994. Contact information for this committee is listed below.

to make legal gun owners do any of this nonsense. New York State already has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the US, and as stated in the OP, the criminals are not affected by any of it...except that the people they prey on have a harder time getting guns to defend themselves.
It is pointless "feel good" legislation at its worst.
Thank you for the post.

9. What about the NRADEMOCRATS? |
|
In the last election, all of my Democratic candidates except one had high marks from the NRA. Three of them were the NRA-endorsed candidate.
You can see my ballot in my sig.

these things get introduced ever year into the legislature and go no where.
Also this bill would be thrown out in court- what happens if you can't afford to pay the registration fee?
Plus cuomo has enough things on his plate- not to mention this is a solution in search of a problem

8. Never underestimate stupid. |
|
Sooner or later if it gets proposed it just might get through. NY is in the crapper from a budget standpoint, a distraction with a carrot on it just might make it look appealing.
They're proposing a bicycle registration as well, go figure. I'm waiting for NY to implode.

10. If you think it's such a good idea... |
|
...then why don't you advocate for it in your home state? You're from Maine, aren't you? It should go over very well there.
