NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The mother of a 6-year-old kindergartner is charged with unlawful weapon possession after a loaded .380 semi-automatic pistol was found Tuesday morning in her son’s backpack at Carter-Lawrence Elementary School.
Shaviya Harris, 24, told detectives she left the gun in her car while a friend borrowed the vehicle. Harris told police that the friend placed the weapon in a bag in the trunk for safekeeping, not realizing it was the child’s backpack.
Harris, who has a prior misdemeanor assault conviction, is being held on a $1,500 bond. The child will not face disciplinary action since he alerted a teacher about the gun.
