Utah Senate agrees to eliminate school no-gun zone

The Senate gave the final approval to a bill that would eliminate the no-gun zone around schools.

Sen. Lyle Hillyard, R-moran-Logan, attempted to amend the bill to keep a small portion of the zone intact. Hillyard's amendment stated the boundary would be reduced to 50 feet or to the road in front of the school, whichever was less. Hillyard's amendment was supported by the governor's office but didn't gain much support on the floor of the Senate.

"It bothers me that we would have people who are law-abiding citizens who are going to have a 50-foot zone enforced on them," said Sen. David Hinkins, R-moran-Orangeville.

"Having them see a gun for the first time brought by someone else, who is not their parents, could be very disturbing," said Sen. Ross Romero, D-Salt Lake City. "It isn't necessarily going to be there for their protection; it isn't there for show and tell."
