The Jan. 8 shooting in Tucson, which killed six and injured 13, was both high-profile and tragic. Less well known, but equally tragic, are the following facts:
• Gun-related deaths and injuries are a daily occurrence in Arizona communities. Each year almost 900 individuals in our state – more than 2 every day – die from gunshot injuries. Nearly 1,400 experience gun-related injuries but survive, many with lifelong health impacts.
Young people pay a particularly heavy price;
gunshot injury is the leading cause of death for Arizona teens 15-17.• Arizona is, in fact, consistently among the most deadly states for gun violence. Over a nine-year period (1999-2007), the state’s rate of gun deaths – nearly 16 per 100,000 – ranked seventh in the nation and was 60 percent higher than the national average of 10.
