Bill Would Allow Concealed Handguns in Restaurants Serving Alcohol (NC)

<snip>

"Allowing them to have access to the weapon inside the place--I think it's a disaster waiting to happen," said Bobby Bennett, manager of McCouls Pub in Greensboro.

"The right to have a gun to protect yourself and your family is one thing I believe in. But, there are certain places where having a gun shouldn't be in the mix," said Jimmy Harle, McCoul's customer.

<snip>

"The concept that I'm asking for someone's ID and also asking, 'Are you carrying a concealed weapon?' just doesn't make any sense. It takes an issue that's a non-issue for me and turns it into a very awakard, uncomfortable situation," said Tray May, owner of Bin 33.

The bill would allow restaurants to post signs banning guns inside. The bill would also allow concealed weapons in state parks, as well as prevent local governments from passing ordinances banning guns in parks they operate.

More GOP/NRA insanity

1. I think the people who write these bills yearn for the days of the wild west!
Interesting that it's been YEARS since Gunsmoke, Wyatt Earp and Bonanza have been popular on TV. Maybe they just long for their childhood!

8. Actually, the "wild west" is a complete myth.
The murder rate in the pioneer west was, with a few small exceptions, extremely low. The image of gunfights every morning and mayhem every night is an invention of popular culture.

13. I have been carrying for three years now
I have never had my gun out of it's holster or fanny pack. When people I know see my fanny pack and ask me about it I just laugh and tell them it's my man bag. I have no desire to be Wyatt Earp or Matt Dillon although I did watch Bonanza as a child and watch it now on TVLand as I am home on disability. I carry to protect myself and my loved ones. If someone is robbing the store or restaurant I am at, I will stay behind cover just like everyone else, I am not going to be a hero for you but if trouble comes looking for me, I will be ready.

20. I am pretty happy about this, in fact.
Here in Oklahoma, carry is allowed in restaurants that serve alcohol, to no ill effect. In restaurants that have a bar partition(I don't know quite what to call them. Those areas with the rail around them with signs posts saying "No one under 21 allowed in this area") guns are not allowed in the bar area, but are fine outside that area.

A law with no discernible benefit is a bad law, and one that needs to be done away with as soon as possible.

9. Any establishment is free to post a sign banning guns.
Previously, the law didn't allow them the option.

12. You can carry concealed in restaurants that serve alcohol
in Texas. Haven't seen anyone shot in their neighborhood Applebees yet. As long as the establishment does not get more than 51% of their income from alcohol it is perfectly legal as it probably is in many other states.

18. "The bill would not allow those with guns in an establishment to drink." Odd you chose to omit that.
Because when the concern is that guns and alcohol are a bad combination, the fact that it would reamin illegal to drink while carrying is rather a crucial point.

You can counter by asking what there would be to physically prevent someone carrying a concealed firearm from going into a restaurant and ordering a drink anyway, and the answer is "exactly the same thing as previously." There will be nothing to physically prevent someone carrying a firearm from walking into a restaurant and ordering one or more drinks, just as there was previously, only now the offense will be not merely walking into the establishment, but actually consuming alcohol.

21. ZOMG, NC is going to change its rules to be like Massachusetts, Oregon,
Minnesota, New Hampshire, and most other states. Wow, the sky is falling.

And McCoul's can post a "No Weapons Allowed" sign, if he thinks his clientele and his environment would make licensed carry by NON-drinkers a problem. And I'm not even sure if his pub is really a restaurant, but I'm not familiar with it so I can't say.

This is a good change in the law, and one that is long overdue in this state.

25. Do people in NC have problems that the rest of the country does not have?
Concealed carry in a restaurant causes no problems anywhere else, why should it be a problem in NC?

:shrug:
