FHP trooper accidentally shot during gun inspection in Belle Glade

A Florida Highway Patrol trooper was accidentally shot Monday night during a gun inspection, FHP's Lt. Tim Frith said.

Trooper Mellow Scheetz, a firearms instructor, was taken to Delray Medical Center by trauma hawk for injuries that were not life threatening after she was shot in the buttock. She was released from the hospital after treatment.

Scheetz, who works for FHP's Fort Pierce district, was at the Belle Glade Correctional Training Facility just before 10 p.m. doing routine weapons inspections.

A supervisor was inspecting a weapon when he accidentally discharged it and a round struck Scheetz, Frith said.

Sorry Glock guys. They are widely used by LEOs and seem susceptible to negligent discharge.

6. Glocks are not unsafe

When I was a newbie with guns I was scared away from Glocks because of reading of the number of cops who had ND's. Got a Sig 228 instead which is a great gun but a little more difficult in competitions like IDPA since first shot is a long DAO pull.

I got a Glock 34 and since have 3 Glocks, 1 S&W M&P, a Springfield XD.

I see Glocks, and the all kinds of other pistols of similiar designs safely used in IDPA and USPSA from newbies to Masters safely.

You just have to be always mindful that any gun can be deadly if not handled properly.

I think with cops & in some gun instructors familiarity breeds a kind of lack of concentration in handling.

I don't own any Glocks but my son-in-law has one and loves it. It does shoot nicely.
