Boise St. Official Warns About Costs of Gun Bill
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/20/sports/20sportsbriefs-ART-guns.html

Boise State University could lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue from lost sporting and entertainment events if Idaho lawmakers approve a bill to allow guns on college campuses, a college official said. Bruce Newcomb, the university’s director of government affairs, said such a law could jeopardize hosting events like the regionals in the N.C.A.A. men’s basketball tournament and the scheduled 2012 N.C.A.A. Division I indoor track and field championships.

guns on campus = stupid

1. Yeah, because higher education is all about sports revenues.
Because I want my tax dollars to go to subsidize breeding grounds for major-league sports players for wealthy sports franchisees and giant media conglomerates.

24. why not show us an argument against CCW on campus rather than just
ranting with a potty mouth. If you think saying "f'in NRA, moran republic" is a way to debate, you should stop posting from your 3rd grade library and get back to learning how to read and write.

20. And I thought you could get through a post without
your normal GOP/NRA shtick. I guess not.

Argue the issue, not the shtick.

22. You do realize this is a passive program, right?
Nobody at the university is going to actually mandate, or strongly suggest, students concealed carry. Nobody at the university is going to offer handguns or accessories at the co-op. There's not going to be a big advertising effort touting the advantages of concealed-carry. Concealed-carry classes are not going to be part of the curriculum.

It sounds to me like you're upset because the university system isn't actively pushing an anti-gun stance.

4. Native Idahoan here.
Oh, are the anti-gunners bitching and moaning in the local newspaper classifieds this morning! It's great!

More guns in more places, and the crime rate will keep going down. Imagine that.

8. Hehe.
No, I usually keep my comments confined to the online newspaper comments section.

But it is fun to watch the antis squirm, as more and more pro-gun laws come to pass.

In the end, their unfounded fears and irrational hatred of guns will be shown to be nothing more than false hysteria.

12. Yeah, right. They'll be a backlash alright.
Namely Republican rule for the foreseeable future, if some of the Democrats don't change their tune and get fully on-board with the Second Amendment.

Many local Dems here in Idaho are supportive of the bill, just a few of the more urban dwellers (of both parties) who are complaining, as usual.

14. No, Republicans are going to lose big in 2012 because they are wantonly destroying unions.
It won't be because of their support of the Second Amendment.

I doubt you're going to be seeing any of these liberal gun laws repealed, especially from these rural states where Democrats have to be pro-gun to win.

16. Alright. If you say so.
We'll just have to wait and see what Democrats do once they are elected.

But I think after its demonstrated that all these guns on campus doesn't lead to wild-west shoot-outs and mayhem, people will realize no harm has come from it and let it stand.

17. Lots of colleges in Utah, Colorado & WA state host NCAA events...
and those states have such laws. I suspect this is Bruce Newcomb's personal bias more than anything else.

27. Why would it make any difference?
All other things being equal, we're still talking about people who would be prepared to travel to Idaho in the first place to attend these events. Such people are already willing to accept that people just about everywhere off-campus might be carrying concealed or indeed openly, so why should it make a difference to them that people might also be carrying on-campus? Or if they're oblivious to the fact that Idaho is a "shall issue" state re: CCW and a "gold star" re: open carry, why would they even think about the possibility that *gasp* someone in the venue might be carrying?
