Show a Little Shame: Hubris and the Gun Lobby
http://baltimorechronicle.com/2011/032211DeBrabander.shtml

This month, the NRA refused an invitation by the White House to sit down with gun safety advocates and administration officials to discuss the future of gun legislation, and better enforcement of current gun laws. The horrific shootings in Tucson this past January, and subsequent calls by a group of big city mayors to improve gun safety, prompted plans for this discussion.

In a statement, NRA chief Wayne LaPierre said “Why should I or the NRA go sit down with a group of people that have spent a lifetime trying to destroy the 2nd Amendment in the United States?”

Why indeed?

Apparently the NRA is sufficiently emboldened to throw caution and modesty to the wind, and doesn’t even feel the need to be seen at the same table with the opposition—or the President. The organization can spurn the White House, even when any policy changes on the table are vague, and the administration’s mood on gun safety is tepid at best. The President doesn’t intend to push new gun legislation, and has stated that he is only interested in enforcing existing gun safety laws more effectively. It would seem there’s little for the NRA to fear in the President’s stance, but even that’s not reason enough to sit at the table.

This is a remarkable sign of the times, especially when you consider the carnage wrought at the shooting in Tucson this winter: 8 dead, 13 wounded, including Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who is recovering from a gunshot wound to the head. If that kind of bloodshed doesn’t prompt the NRA to show at least some humility and cooperation on the matter, what will?

2. Why would LaPierre ever want to show 'humility and cooperation'?
He does not, and never has supported the 2nd Amendment. He is purely a RW operative in a position where he can fuck with Democrats - that's all he's ever been interested in doing.

His NRA is not the NRA of our fathers and grandfathers. It is not the NRA which helped craft the legislation that put restrictions on automatic weapons and sawed off shotguns.

Anyone who believes it is, is braindead.

Edited on Tue Mar-22-11 07:15 PM by lawodevolution
Even the GOA is more significant than ol' handgun control Inc. Why would the NRA want to sit down at a table with the Brady campaign and the president and allow Obama to lecture them that they must compromise with this bankrupt unpopular has been group (Brady campaign) that is 1% of the political significance of the NRA?

42. Like the asshole "ex cop" in their old FiveseveN video...
you know, the one that says that the hypothetical police officer that is shot with a 12 gauge slug would 'probably be okay' because it didn't penetrate the level II armor they slung across a round bail. The EEEEEEVVVVILLLLL 5.7 round (similar in ballistics to a .22 magnum rimfire) would have instantly KILLED HIM DEAD because they went through the vest, but somehow the equivalent of hitting someone in the solar plexus with a big ol hammer wouldn't.

Yeah, he isn't an asshole at all, spreading lies and misinformation. Tell you what, you can put on a level II vest, and I'll hit you in the gut with an 8 pound sledge, and you can tell me if you are "alright..."

There's plenty of assholery at HCI.

Where is the justice?

And what are we willing to accept as the smaller injustice for the justice we seek?

You want some sympathetic character to be able to shoot an assailant who is intent on using force against them other than firearms. (Because guns as a solution to guns is a non starter, right?)

I want to be able to keep citizens who are going about their daily business from taking bullets in their hide to indulge a culture of guns and ammo. And who commonly take those rounds in their hides fatally.

YOU are the one who is slinking.

40. Why do you ignore the scenario when the smaller woman faces a gun of his own convenience?
You are basing your argument on a crime scene in which you want a gun to save the day.

So you are doing battle in the realm of the crime scenes which actually exist.

Post them if you can find them.

What I see most of the time is someone who assumed a power position because they were holding a gun and ammo and was using them AGAINST a defensive gun owner.

OK I give up. Bring me guns who saved the day because a gun is presented against them.

I welcome those stories, when they do battle against others who DON'T use guns.

They are few.

at least. Getting an illegal gun on the Black market is a great way to get

54. There is no new firearms law "on the table"
There are the annual failed proposals from Carolyn McCarthy, and once in a while something from Lautenburg to assure contributions from their gun control fans.

But, not only is there no pending legislation at the Federal level, the President recent Op Ed confirmed the individual right interpretation, putting a final stake through the heart of the "It's all abut the Militia" gang.

But feel free to continue to make shit up and get called on it regularly. You are an effective example for lurkers of how shrill, shallow and bankrupt the arguments for more gun control have become. Thanks for your contributions.

45. There is a difference between rational and irrational fear.
Namely, rational fear is supported by data.

See, when politicians start talking about banning weapons and magazines, people believe them BECAUSE THEY DID IT BEFORE.

When people say "ZOMG BLOOD WILL RUN IN THE STREETS IF WE GIVE OUT THE CCWs!!!!" we have data to show it WON'T.

Get it now?

7. I believe that LaPierre made a serious mistake by not attending the meeting ...
He has no reason to fear any argument or idea that the anti-RKBA groups can present. In fact he can propose ideas that actually work to reduce gun violence rather than the "feel good" laws that the organizations such as the Brady Campaign will propose.

Another ban on assault weapons or even a ban on magazines that hold more than 10 rounds is worse than useless. It will cost our party votes in the next election and might put a Republican in the White House.

I'm an NRA member and I feel that LaPierre should have the balls to stand up to the Brady Campaign and other similar organizations. Why retreat when you are winning?

I suspect LaPierre is merely playing politics rather than trying to address the problem. If so, he is a fool.

49. IMHO attending would be a major tactical error
He'd be sitting across the table from people like a very desperate Helmke and Hennigan as well Bloomberg (Mayors Against Illegal Guns are also on the invitation list) and lord knows what other gun control organizations with no actual base of support along with people like McCarthy and Lautenberg. Who else would be on the NRA side of the discussion?

Certainly not Joe Biden, co-author of the 1994 AWB and the only candidate in the last presidential primaries to specifically call out gun owners as possibly mentally ill, that the President has assigned this job to. I'm guessing that GOA won't be there either.

Who will be doing all the reporting and filtering of the conversations for the great unwashed masses? The fair minded Diane (Let's rig explosive charges on this truck) Sawyer? That even handed Katie Couric? I'm sure the New York Times will provide a fair, unbiased view of actually how evil all gun owners are.

At the end of the conferences the administration can claim "Well, we met with everyone and here's our new policy based on those recommendations". If the NRA disagrees they try and shut them up by saying "you had a seat at the table" therefore anything they propose is "sensible and reasonable".

Too much to lose and nothing to really gain. Even if he went the gun control people would ignore any points he raises and ignore any actual facts.

By sitting down at the same table, it gives the illusion that all parties are equal, that all viewpoints deserve the same consideration.

22. Baltimore Chronicle?
As in, number four with a bullet in murder rate, Baltimore?

While the nation has a decreasing murder rate (4.2 per 100,000), Baltimore is at 37 per 100,000.

Something tells me it isn't the guns or gun control, when MD has some of the strictest laws, relatively low ownership, yet one of the highest murder rates.

25. Actually, LaPierre missed a stunningly obvious tactical moment.
He should have accepted the meeting...

With the single provision that the entire process be broadcast live, with no interuptions, on every news media channel in the nation.

And watch the anti's heads explode.

Damn, it's like the man never read Sun Tzu....

35. Ultimately, the NRA fights its battles in court and state-level legislature...
Legislation abides by rule of law... and most practicable firearm law falls under state (not federal) jurisdiction. The courts and local policy are what matters. They dont give a shit about federal-level figure heads or broke-ass lobbyists. Especially when they have opposing viewpoints.

Lapierre's statement as such was perfectly made.

51. I don't pay NRA dues for showing shame and humility.

As the article freely admits, vague or not, policy changes are on the table. You can be certain that whatever they are, they will restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens. It is not in the NRA's interest to be a party in crafting any policies that do that, nor, as a dues-paying member, would I want them to be.

Further, the President's recent speech on firearm policy had a very important quote:

http://azstarnet.com/article_011e7118-8951-5206-a878-39bfbc9dc89d.html

"Porous background checks are bad for police officers, for law-abiding citizens and for the sellers themselves. If we're serious about keeping guns away from someone who's made up his mind to kill, then we can't allow a situation where a responsible seller denies him a weapon at one store, but he effortlessly buys the same gun someplace else."

Emphasis mine.

Note, here, that he did not say, "but he effortlessly buys the same gun at another store." What this signals to me is increased scrutiny on private firearm sales. I don't have a problem with this, so long as anonymous firearm ownership is preserved. But I am skeptical that this issue will be addressed or preserved.

While it might be worthwhile to have the NRA at the table to try and guide this legislation so that anonymous firearm ownership is preserved, the odds are high that they would not succeed, and that they will only end up with a black eye. Better that they simply fight in the courts.

53. Is there anything of value that the NRA could have gotten by going to the meeting?
To gun control groups, reasonable laws and "gun safety" translate to the next increment of civil rights to be taken away. Had LaPierre gone to the meeting, Brady would have laid its list of demands on the table and the onus is on the NRA to explain why they're unreasonable. Does anyone, even you, believe that the NRA would get objective coverage of its positions in the media?

Would Brady and Obama be willing to put something on the table that might be attractive to the NRA and gun owners in general? How legislation to implement the spirit of Heller and McDonald on a national level? National right to carry? Access to NICS by private citizens? Reigning in BATF abuses? What would you offer?

The fact is that neither you, Brady nor Obama would offer anything, so there is really only downside if LaPierre participates. Besides that, Brady is virtually dead politically and meeting with them would assign credibility they clearly do not deserve. It's a no brainer in my book.

58. Obama asking the NRA to sit with the Brady campaign, VPC etc to work things out is like
Asking the NAACP to sit down with the KKK to work out a compromise, the NAACP like the NRA would be offended and are more interested in the win rather than compromising with an unpopular "has been" bigoted hate group group.

Name a single gun control organization that spends more time or money training people on firearms SAFETY.

80. "calls by a group of big city mayors to improve gun safety"
That's code for "let's figure out more ways to violate the Second Amendment."

Even the NRA is smart enough not to walk into a hit piece.

If they go they'll be the token, there only so the mayors can say "It is non-partisan, even the NRA was there."
