MONTANA: Permitless Carry Bill Goes To Governor

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — A measure to allow people to carry a concealed gun without a permit from law enforcement is closer to becoming law.

The Senate endorsed the measure late Friday in a 29-21 vote. The gun-rights proposal has already cleared the House.

Currently in Montana, a permit and background check from authorities is needed to carry a concealed gun into cities and towns. There are also old restrictions on carrying without a permit into logging, mining and railroad camps.

The new proposal would let people carry concealed guns into those areas as long as they have taken a class from a certified trainer or state agency. No criminal background check would be required, nor would the state be issuing a formal permit.

Governor Brian Schweitzer (D) has an NRA rating of "A" and was endorsed by the NRA-PVF. He is expected to sign the bill.

Montana would be the fifth state to go green on guns.

2. I have mixed feelings on this.
On one hand, the people who bother go get CCW permits are hardly ever involved in any kind of crime. And the rest of the people who carry concealed firearms are going to regardless of whether or not a permit is required. So why bother having permits?

On the other hand now every time there is a shooting by a criminal they will be lumped in with all the lawful concealed carriers.

3. It creates jobs

And whatever would we do if they weren't there to dutifully file our paperwork ? The resulting carnage is something I would rather not even consider .

5. They get "lumped in" anyway.
They may as well go ahead with it and follow the trend of the sky not falling. That really seems to piss off the hand-wringers.

Schadenfreude, it's what's for breakfast.

4. Look at that, Democrat that "gets it"!
And he is popular too.

6. You know THEY are just going to say he is a sell-out
to the NRA/GOP, jack booted thugery and so on and so forth.

Gun control has been a losing effort since the failed AWB and it's about time we got some common sense Dems.

7. Even if "they" were right (which they are not), it STILL loses elections.
I don't understand taking a position that you KNOW will cost you an election. WTF? Principles are one thing, but that is just insane.

8. He's also a real progressive
Governor Mark Warner (D-VA) and Governor Paul Patton (D-KY) signed pro-gun, pro-carry legislation, but I think they were more centrist to Conserva-Dem.
