Cuccinelli says gun in worship service permissible (VA)

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli (edit: R-moran) has issued a legal opinion that it is lawful in Virginia to carry a weapon into a worship service for personal protection.

But he also says a place of worship, like any other owner of private property, can bar guns.

Cuccinelli issued the opinion Friday in response to a query from Del. Mark L. Cole, R- (edit: moran) Spotsylvania. Cole had tried unsuccessfully this year to win passage of a bill that would have codified the right to carry a firearm in church.

Cole asked whether it is permissible for someone to carry a firearm into a place of worship for personal safety under a law that requires a "good and sufficient reason" to do so during a service.
