Concealed weapons policy at Capitol under review
http://www.news10.net/news/article/133222/29/Concealed-weapons-policy-at-Capitol-under-review-

Assembly Speaker John Perez has temporarily stopped efforts by the Assembly Chief Sergeant-at-Arms Ron Pane to allow four unnamed legislators to carry concealed weapons in the State Capitol.

<snip>

Some Democrats, like Majority Assembly Floor Leader Charles Calderon, don't agree guns should be in the Capitol at all.

"If there are no guns around, then there can be no gun violence," Calderon said. "At least not from the members standpoint, and hopefully we would catch that through our security system into the building. So it's probably better not to have any guns at all in the building."

Pro gun advocate Assem. Tim Donnelly (R-(edit: moran)Hisperia) disagrees. He said it's not the gun that kills people, it's people who kill people. He supports the right for assembly members to carry concealed weapons.

1. Charles Calderon doesn't seem to understand reality...
"If there are no guns around, then there can be no gun violence," Calderon said.

The problem with his rationale is that words on some piece of paper prohibiting people from having guns around don't actually STOP the people who would ingore such rules from actually having guns.

3. I think ANY legislature that votes to allow concealed carry at schools, restaurants and the like
should be FORCED to allow ALL who enter the Capitol to carry weapons as well. Maybe these people would not be so eager to allow unrestricted carry laws if they had to live with THEIR workplace under the same rules.

7. Remember Senator Thomas Dodd?
He was the father of the former Senator Chris Dodd.

Before he was Senator he was one of the prosecutors at the Nuremberg trials. He was a strong advocate of gun control and essentially wrote the Gun Control Act of 1968. He was famous for a couple other things, but one of the most ironic was that his Colt's Pocket Model fell from his coat onto the floor of the United States Senate chamber. It's telling how the most vociferous gun control advocates are so often so spectacularly hypocritical.

There were no concealed carry permits issued by the District in 1968.

4. If no guns are allowed, then those found to have them can be arrested.
Or, if legislators, at least the guns can be confiscated.

What could be scarier than a gun-toting teabagger legislator? ;-)

And a rec for the thread.

2. Well, I must say I agree - legislators should not be carrying guns on the floor.
They should all be wearing rapiers, so they can duel when they have intractable differences.

8. That brings up an interesting point.
"Dueling with Sword and Pistol" by Paul Kirchner

Prior to the Civil War, Sen. Ben Wade (R-Ohio) said something on the floor which was deemed insulting to Sen. Robert Toombs (D-Ga), and a friend told Toombs, "you must challenge the old wretch!" Toombs replied, "No, I mustn't, for that old wretch is the deadliest shot in the District. Wade and I have been out practicing many times together, and he can hit a ten-cent piece at thirty paces every time, and to tell you the truth, sir, I cannot!"

Makes you wonder? Is this the reason the Democratic Party promotes an anti-gun platform?

9. After the first duel...
I'm betting the level of discourse would be much nicer. Dueling with swords is an incredibly bloody mess and more than a bit painful. I agree. All legislators should be required to defend their honor with cold steel. I really can't see a down side to this.

Electing a President with a joust would also keep the Donald Trumps and Chester Chickenhawks of the world out of the race. Campaign finance would be much simpler and you can bet all contenders would support affordable health care after a few rounds. Wanna serve? Lets see you bleed a bit first.

6. So what they're saying is they don't trust our elected law makers
to conduct themselves in a gentlemanly and professional manner.

Unrec for the normal shtick.

11. More history for you.
In 1835, Richard Lawrence, stepped out from hiding behind a column at the US Capitol and aimed a pistol at Andrew Jackson, which misfired. Lawrence then pulled out a second pistol, which also misfired. He then tried to flee.

President Jackson, ran the man down and attacked Lawrence with his cane. The retaliatory beating was so intense, others present, including Davy Crockett, stepped in to restrain the President. Afterward, due to curiosity concerning the double misfires, Jackson tested and retested the pistols. Each time they performed perfectly.

I don't much agree with President Jackson on too much but glad he was lucky.
