No charges in accidental shooting of 2-year-old

LOWELL, Vt. (AP) — Vermont State Police say no charges will be filed in the death of a 2-year-old boy who was accidentally shot at his Lowell home.

Police say Enoch Beckwith was shot in the chest April 4 with a .22 caliber rifle at his home on Potter Road. Enoch was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said Thursday that another child was playing with the gun in a downstairs bedroom and accidentally shot Enoch while Enoch's mother was upstairs with three other children. Authorities have concluded that the shooting was an accident and no one in the family will be charged.

when little kids play with guns and one of them is killed?

I suppose it depends somewhat on the local or state laws, but isn't SOMEONE responsible for making sure kids can't play with loaded guns?

And as an aside, I always wonder if the family who had the gun will in any way re-think having guns, or how they store them or the ammunition now that the two-year old was shot dead.

3. Very sad, and totally avoidable

Proper storage, but especially making sure that all children understand firearms and treat them properly, would go a long way toward eliminating these accidents.

Hope the family(ies?) can heal and move on...

That is no reason to take my guns away from me.

Sorry but to me that is absolutely negligence. I cannot believe there are no charges.
