Three Arrested After Man, 83, Shoots Burglar in Alamance Co.

BURLINGTON, N.C. (WGHP)— Three men were arrested late Friday evening in Burlington after an elderly man shot and injured a burglar who had broken into his home.

Officers responded to an apartment complex at 119 North Fisher St. shortly after 10 p.m. in after hearing reports of gunshots, police said. Investigators found 83-year-old Carl Lea, who told officers that someone had tried to rob him after breaking into his home.

Shortly afterward, investigators arrested 27-year-old Elijah Dewayne Wilkins and 38-year-old Duane Lee Smith, both of 206 North Fisher St., along with 22-year-old Jason Leon Chapman, of 6821 Championship Drive in Whitsett, in connection with the break-in.

Police said Chapman had been shot in the upper-left leg by the victim, who was uninjured during the break-in.

Some posters here would deny this elder man the ability to effectively defend himself with a gun. They would demand that he, at age 83, fight against a 22-yr-old, a 27-yr-old, and a 38-yr-old, all at the same time.

2. Hello? The intruders were carrying and emboldened by guns of their own.
Zero points awarded for your cause, at least with respect to THIS story.

3. Two young men and a middle-aged man vs. an 83 yr old.
They hardly needed guns to embolden them. He damn sure needed his gun.

6. But how would this turn out if no one had guns?
Let's say your Utopian worldview came to be and there were no firearms. And then you have three twenty-somethings breaking into the home of an elderly man.

What do you suggest he do? He's 83 years old, up against three criminals in their mid-twenties.

He could try to run away, he could submit to whatever these three criminals had in store for him, or he could engage in a physical contest of strength against them.

Is this the way you would prefer things to happen?

7. I think they were emboldened by the fact that he was 83
He just leveled the playing field by having a gun and knowing how to use it.
