Pink pistols, fitted gear: NRA Annual Convention will court women
Edited on Mon Apr-25-11 04:44 PM by RamboLiberal
Dyanna Auston is the kind of woman the National Rifle Association looks for.

The single mom browsed Anthony Arms & Accessories in West Mifflin last week and bought a .38-caliber, pink-gripped Taurus pistol for personal protection. It's the first gun for Auston of Duquesne, and though she's not a member of the NRA, she said she'd consider joining and checking out this weekend's 2011 Annual Meetings & Exhibits in the David L. Lawrence Convention Center for gun accessories geared toward women.

"I wanted a gun, and I wanted it to be girlie, so I went straight for the pink one," Auston, 21, said as she shopped with her sister Dawntaya Auston, 27, who owns a black 9 mm pistol. "I want to be able to protect myself."

Women increasingly are becoming gun owners in the United States, and manufacturers and retailers are tailoring products and classes toward the burgeoning market, instructors and an NRA spokeswoman said.

The NRA's national convention, which runs Friday through Sunday, expects to draw 65,000 to 70,000 people in its first return to Pittsburgh since 2004. A large portion of the more than 400 exhibitors will display products geared toward women, including pink and pearl gun grips and handles, designer leather purses that double as gun holsters, and hunting clothing fitted for a woman's body, said NRA spokeswoman Rachel Parsons.

Andrew Russell | Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

I know this type of story has been posted before but thought it a little different spin talking about the NRA annual convention. Since it is in my hometown I'm going Friday and being a female gunowner I will definitely check it out - though I'm not into pink guns.

In the past I do think two groups pf gun owners have been somewhat ignored - women and left-handers.

And attributable to the NRA and not actual market research?

Dude, sit down and have a cuppa....

Edit: Wait, wait... I thought black meant "assault rifle"... or some such nonsense?

Pink Pistol benefiting Breast Cancer Awareness – Smith and Wesson M&P9 JG
Posted on January 25, 2011 by josh

If you cant tell already, Im a Smith and Wesson fan, specifically the M&P series of pistols. I was cruising the smith and wesson site and saw the M&P 9 JG. The M&P9 JG is a 9mm M&P pistol with a few added features. It has a fiber optic front sight, A Warren tactical rear sight, 2 Pink interchangeable backstraps in addition to the 3 black one, and a breast cancer awareness ribbon engraved on the slide. This pistol was designed in collaboration with Julie Goloski-Golob. Being that my mother is a breast cancer survivor, I will have to get one of these pistols.

If you are looking for another pistol to just sport a cool pink color, you have a couple other options. The great thing about these pink pistols is they are small and mostly meant for conceal carry. It’s just me, but I think a pink pistol should be small and dainty.

Smith and Wesson also makes another pink gun, but in revolver form. It is the M642. I is a snub nose (2 in barrel) that is chambered in .38spl. This is a pretty good looking gun for your wife or whatever but it in no way benefits breast cancer awareness.

28. And yet another pink pistol....
The SigSauer Mosquito.

Personally, I'd never buy one, think they're kinda hideous. HOWEVER, there are two ladies at work who decided to take the plunge into firearms ownership BECAUSE they could but them in pink. If they're happy with them, then I'm happy for them.

My daughter can't make up her mind whether she wants a "Hello Kitty" AR-15 build or not..........

13. Pro carry = pro women

Regardless of who is promoting women carrying firearms. I can't think of many tools that are more personally empowering than a firearm and the training to use it. To deny RKBA is to deny a woman the chance to defend herself on an equal footing against any aggressor.

Seriously, all women love pink?

Okay, I had my daughter's rifle painted pink.

But my other daughter and my wife? No way would they ever be caught with a pink gun.

23. Then don't buy one.
If women view it as condescending and don't want pink then they'll buy black guns or some other color.

There's no rule against a woman buying a non pink gun, they get made that way because there's a demand for them.

29. Ummm, no-one said "all".
But it appears there is a significant market demand for things like this. Pink is only one of a palette of colors available for guns.

Just ask Mayor Bloomberg-buttinsky. Seems he hates him some rainbow....

They make pink fishing tackle, too. My wife looked at that stuff at the sporting goods store and said, "I wouldn't be caught dead with that crap." I don't let her go fishing with me any more. She kicks my ass bass fishing. Pink fishing reels? Nobody wants that crap. Pink pistols? WTF?

31. According to sales figures...
a reasonable number of people do want it.

Not my cup of tea either (I hate pink), I much prefer something in basic black, forest green, bright red or yellow, even flourescent orange. Or this:

33. I don't know. I've never been a fan of those laminated stocks.
They're just too flashy for me, really. I'm sort of a dark walnut guy who likes a dull tung oil finish. No reflections to flash a deer with. I used to drool over the stocks in the old Herter's catalogs, if you remember those. I never bought one, though, and have always just refinished the stocks on my own rifles. For pistols, my main concern is a non-slip grip, so I've always opted for synthetic grips.

I've just never been much for fancy stuff on firearms. As long as the thing shoots well, I'm a happy guy.

One exception, though: When I was 8, my Dad gave me a brand new Daisy BB rifle with a blond wooden stock. The same year, he gave me a woodburning set. So, that evening, I burned my name into the stock in big block letters. My Dad wasn't all that amused, really. I still have that old Daisy, hanging on the wall, and it still shoots OK.
