McKinney homeowner shot with his own gun after confronting three burglars
McKinney police are investigating an overnight burglary that ended when the homeowner was shot with his own gun and the attackers fled.

Police were called about 3:40 a.m. Wednesday and found the homeowner on his back patio with a single gunshot wound to his upper torso. The gun was left behind by the burglars.

The victim said he confronted three men who entered his home in the 1700 block of Surrey Lane, near Glen Oaks and Lake Forest drives. A struggle ensued, and the man was shot after losing control of his gun.

To be fair thought I'd post this. One lesson - even if you have a gun - call 911 and hole up in a room preferably behind good hard cover instead of confronting burglars. I can't say since I don't have the details that is what this homeowner did.

1. You know your tactics are not working as planned when
the report contains the phrase "a struggle ensued over the gun".

3. 3:1 odds aren't good no matter how well trained you are.

5. My CC instructor said the same thing, call the police and hide with your family in a room.....
if they come in that room open fire.

7. I find most CC instructors teach that way
Including NRA personal protection course. Now schools with a shoot house will train on clearing but caution it should only be used if you need to get to the room(s) of other family members.

I can guarantee he was doing it wrong.

Edit: I don't mean to dogpile on the victim, it's more of a cautionary tale.

8. I tend to agree with the reasonable recommendation.

While I think public carrying is wrong, I have a gun in my house. But, there is nothing worth killing someone over -- other than lives -- in my house. So a burglar can take whatever from my living room, etc. (including some nice musical instruments). Walk through the door where my family is, and bullets will fly and/or machetes will swing.
