Presidential aspirant and former Republican (edit: moran) U.S. senator from Pennsylvania Rick Santorum has told National Rifle Association members meeting in Pittsburgh that President Barack Obama doesn't understand America.

Santorum spoke for 14 minutes Friday in a convention center ballroom nearly filled with more than 1,000 of the estimated 70,000 members meeting in Pittsburgh through Sunday.

During his speech, Santorum criticized remarks the president made about two weeks ago when he said American "would not be a great country" without social programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

Santorum spoke after former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told the crowd that the 2012 election will determine "whether we're going to remain a nation that believes our rights come from our creator."
