GUNS OF THE DAY - APRIL 8, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. My gun of the day today is my favorite:
The Browning A-5 semi-auto shotgun. The finest duck gun made over 100 years ago, remained in production until the end of the 20th century. Simple to operate and points instinctively, my A-5 spent many scores of soggy mornings in a duck blind with me and my labrador.

So, I give you my favorite Browning:

3. Man Killed In Anderson Shooting (NC)
"Few details are available, but Anderson County deputy coroner Charlie Bozeman told WYFF News 4 that Anderson police officers responded to a burglar alarm at Grady's Great Outdoors store on Clemson Boulevard just after 11 p.m.
Bozeman said a shooting occured behind the store after officers arrived. He said one man was killed.
Initial reports indicated that some officers were also injured, but Bozeman said later Thursday morning that no officers were injured.
Investigators said a gun was found near the man who was killed, whose identity has not been released. "

6. Former Firefighter Questioned In Firehouse Shooting (MI)
"Police were questioning a former employee of the Pontiac Fire Department in the shooting of a firefighter Wednesday morning. Justin Parsons, 24, of Waterford Township, was taken into custody after a shooting that happened at Fire Station No. 1 located at 123 E. Pike St.
Police say Parsons was being questioned, but has not been named as a suspect in the incident.
Investigators believe the shooting victim, a 48-year-old fireman, answered a knock at the firehouse's side door Wednesday morning. When he let the person in, he was shot twice at close range, according to Pontiac police. His co-workers found him lying on the floor around 6:45 a.m., according to reports. Police said a small-caliber weapon was used in the shooting. "

7. Rwandan Leader Lashes Out Over Genocide
Edited on Thu Apr-08-04 08:29 AM by Romulus
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20040407/D81Q5N2G2.html

KIGALI, Rwanda (AP) - Marking the 10-year anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, President Paul Kagame lashed out at the international community Wednesday for failing to stop the slaughter, and pledged that if another genocide should happen, Rwanda would be the first to send troops to stop it.

*snip*

When the 100-day slaughter began, the U.N. had 2,519 peacekeepers in Rwanda. The most heavily armed U.N. contingent was a 450-member Belgian battalion, but Brussels withdrew days after Hutus killed 10 Belgian soldiers on April 7, 1994.

Other U.N. troops were busy "tanning at the pool" in neighboring Uganda and monitoring its border to ensure that weapons did not reach Kagame's rebels, who were fighting to end the slaughter, Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said during the ceremony. U.N. troops at the time had been withdrawn from Rwanda and were staying at hotels in Uganda.

*snip*

"All these powerful nations regarded 1 million lives as valueless, as another statistic and could be dispensed with," Kagame said, referring to all of the people killed in Rwanda between 1990 and the end of the genocide in 1994.

*snip/more*

Those would be "non-state actors" with firearms who stopped the genocide against their own people, while the UN sycophants sipped lattes in cafes around the world and tut-tutted why the people of Rwanda didn't just sing kum-bay-yah and talk about their feelings. - Rom

8. State, feds clash on gun records (IL)
"The Illinois State Police have collected computerized records of 2.15 million firearms transactions since 1992, when the state launched instant background checks of gun buyers.
Now, Gov. Blagojevich is trying to fend off federal efforts to scrap this statewide database of gun purchases that he believes is key to the fight against terrorism and street crime -- but which the gun lobby calls an infringement of buyers' constitutional rights.
Blagojevich is concerned about a law Congress passed in January requiring the FBI to destroy records of instant background checks within 24 hours. The U.S. Justice Department has warned Illinois it must comply with the law -- which would mean getting rid of the state's gun-purchase database.
On Wednesday, Blagojevich sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft urging him to repeal the 24-hour limit.
"Only criminals stand to gain from the destruction of firearm transaction data," he wrote."

Criminals sounds like an apt description of AshKKKroft and the gun lobby....

13. Many criminals stand in line at the gun stores for their NICS check
The NICS records aren't going to help with criminals, since we already know they don't really belly up to the counter to buy them at gun stores. In Illinois gun show sales are NICS checked as well.

Last week the Gov made a speech where he announced that they were being smuggled in from Kentucky and that's why we need tougher Illinois laws. Huh?

It won't even help designate straw purchasors who buy a gun as a "gift" for their family member, like Sarah Brady's high powered sniper rifle allegedly for her son to deer hunt with. They only tell you who the initial purchasor was.

But heck, ignore the Feds Rod. The state is already $5 billion in the hole, the fines probably won't amount to a hill of beans. In the meantime keep pissing off the downstate Dem's so the Republican's have a shot at the Statehouse again.

34. Some certainly do...
"Police arrested a suspect, Dawan Dixon Jr., in January when he tried to buy a semiautomatic pistol from a York County gun dealer. "

http://www.dailypress.com/news/yahoo/dp-89707sy0apr08,0,7656039.story?coll=dp-aol-yahoo-nws-hed

And there are plenty of scummy gun dealers who are perfectly happy to wink at straw purchases.

38. The record are for successful transactions
A failed NICS check isn't what our beloved Gov is trying to hang onto.

A failed NICS, depending on the reasons for the failure, can result in an immediate arrest or a simple "sorry, the feds say you are prohibited".

Any criminal stupid enough to try and buy a gun with a NICS check deserves to be put away so they can't reproduce more incredibly stupid people.

It's the records of folks that have legally bought firearms, passed all the hoops that the State of Illinois created and he wants to hang on to them "just in case".

What you, me or anyone thinks about the issue of maintaining a gun owners registration is beside the point. He is violating the law and is going to spend my tax money.

24. What does the law mandate?
From the article...

"Since 1998, the FBI was required to destroy records of background checks within 90 days, but in January, Congress tightened that window to 24 hours."

"Illinois was never told it needed to comply with the 90-day record retention limit, said Abby Ottenhoff, a spokeswoman for the governor. But when Congress passed the 24-hour limit, the feds told Illinois it must destroy the records just as the FBI does, Ottenhoff said."

Was Illinois breaking the law between 1998 and January when the new legislation was passed? (in keeping a database)

Is Illinois breaking the law now? (in keeping a database)

(been doing much in the area of home improvement and remodeling...hot summer to prepare for...haven't been on-line alot...Hey folks!!)

10. Ruger Mark II in .270
April 8, 2004:

The gun of the day is the Ruger Mark II in .270. The .270 offers a very flat trajectory but still delivers a high energy shot at longer distances. Add a scope to this firearm, and you have one sweet setup.

Go out today, and try the new gun of the day: the Ruger Mark II in .270....especially if you live in deer over-populated New Jersey:P

and I loved it. Talk about a crisp trigger pull. The only problem was I had a fixed 4x scope on it, which is woefully inadequate for the 7mm.

I'm retiring my current 30-06 and am thinking about either the Ruger, Remington BDL, or Browning A Bolt.

21. the dangers of cross-cultural communication

"Man Shot During Church's Chicken Robbery"

I thought that some church was holding a chicken robbery. Perhaps a variation on a pot luck dinner, for Lutherans in search of excitement.

Now that I think about it, I believe we had lunch at a Church's Chicken someplace en route to Florida last spring, coincidentally on a Sunday morning, in the company of many people in church-going outfits. Who could blame me for being confused?

"Three people were killed in separate shootings in Baltimore yesterday, and the city's homicide toll grew by yet another from a ruling by the state medical examiner's office that the recent death of a 26-year-old man stemmed from injuries he suffered in a 1998 shooting, police said.
The four deaths pushed the city's homicide total this year to 74. At the same time last year, there were 70 homicides, and the city went on to record 271, police said. "

"Frankie Spoone was found shot to death Tuesday. Anderson County Deputies said Wednesday that her husband, who has been arrested before for beating Frankie, is the lead suspect in the murder case.
Investigators told WYFF News 4 that James Spoone shot his wife several times inside the bathroom of her sons home.
A trail of police reports tells the story of a man known for a history of domestic violence. He beat his wife and threatened to kill her last September. Two months ago he struck again, in Greenville.
Back on Feb. 3 he threatened to kill her and we arrested him. Yesterday he actually did that, said Lt. Mike Gambrell of the Greenville Police Dept. "

32. Outlawed air guns ‘could fall into hands of criminals’
Many hundreds of powerful, gas-powered guns in Tayside and Fife, which are soon to be outlawed, could be driven underground or fall into the hands of criminals, according to Eric Wallace, the Genrothes-based secretary of a national air gun association.

Only a handful of owners in both areas, where it is estimated there are as many as 1200 self contained gas cartridge handguns and rifles, have so far applied for a firearms certificate.

Owners of the Brocock make of weapon have until the end of April to hand them in or apply for newly-designated firearms certificates, otherwise they risk a minimum of five years or maximum of 10 years in jail for possession of the weapons.

Several have voluntarily handed in their guns, which so far have exclusively been used in clubs throughout the country for target shooting.

50. Well I'm not sruprised either...
..that you would made a statement not backed up with facts.

What percentage (approximately) of gunowners would you say are not responsible or law-abiding? There are about 80 million gun-owners;
how many of them would you like to insult today?

55. Gee, roe...
How many of them have their heads up their ass? Sure seems ot be a ton of them most days.

But as for backed up by facts...it's a gun owner cheering because he's detected someother gun owners behaivng irresponsibly and defying the law. And that IS a fact.

51. Conan Doyle wrote one in to a Holmes mystery if I recall
I can't remember exactly which story, but in one an assassin uses an air rifle with a soft lead projectile to try and kill Holmes in 221B in the evening.

Holmes foils him by setting up a dummy to take the shot and jumping the bad guy before he can recharge the gun.

I recall Holmes talking about what a perfect weapon it was, perfectly silent, accurate up to 75 yards and deadly in the hands of a skilled marksman.

36. Wow, contrast that to this country...
Edited on Thu Apr-08-04 01:52 PM by MrBenchley
where gun nuts, the gun industry and the GOP are fighting hard to make sure real guns get in the hands of as many criminals as possible...

Guess that's why the entire UK has less gun crime than just Birmingham, Alabama....
