Road Rage in the News
Road rage killing leads to 40-year prison term

By David Doege
of the Journal Sentinel staff
Last Updated: April 14, 2000

The victim, Adrian Russell, 18, was fatally shot on July 2 while fleeing from the Garners in his mother's car, which he had been driving to an auto parts store.

<snip>

The situation developed after a car driven by Toriano Garner, 20, stopped for a red light on Milwaukee's near northwest side, according to a criminal complaint.

A passenger in the front seat told police that when Russell's car pulled up to the stoplight beside the Garner car, glances, and then profanity-laced taunts were exchanged, according to the complaint.

The passenger in the front seat said that Toriano Garner pulled out a gun after Russell made a remark about going in his trunk, the complaint says. Russell raced away, pursued by the Garner vehicle, the complaint says.

5. Suspect In Hit-And-Run Incidents Undergoing Mental Evaluation (NC)
RALEIGH, N.C. -- A driver who allegedly went on a deadly rampage spanning three counties Wednesday is at Dorothea Dix Hospital for mental evaluation and drug testing.

Authorities say Abdullah El-Amin Shareef, 25, stole a city of Fayetteville van and pickup truck and ran over five people Wednesday morning, killing one.

Officials say Abdullah El-Amin Shareef, 25, stole two vehicles and led authorities through three counties before being taken into custody Wednesday. One pedestrian was killed and four others were injured....

...Shareef has a history of prior criminal violations, including a DWI and driving with a revoked license in 1998 and a speeding violation in 2003....

And the corrupt car industry does everything it can to ensure that every nutjob can get his hands on any kind of vehicle he wants.

9. Close the car-show loophole!!!
Edited on Thu Apr-15-04 05:31 PM by beevul
Any tom, dick, or loony can go to a car show and buy a high horsepower "assault" car no questions asked, no background check, and go out driving drunk, or speeding, or drag racing. What else would anyone need one of them for? Noone needs a corvette to get groceries or take the kids to school after all. That is, noone without a fetish. <snicker>

The corrupt car industry is doing everything in its power to make sure that Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaros, Chevelles, Chargers, GTOs, 'Cudas, and the like flood our streets. These high powered vehicles are the obvious choice of criminal element. (I'd post pictures, but some pro-car "enthusiast" would likely be stroking his stubby over such car porn - who else besides a fetishist would be interested in such car-porn-details?)

Doing everything in its power to keep the car-show loophole propped wide open.

These are just the sort of cars that racists are sure to at least have walked near.

16. It's not just the car shows
In October 2002 I bought a used SUV from a major Nissan dealer in National City, CA.

I paid with a check.

The dealer verified that the check was good, and once the small stack of paperwork was done they handed me the keys.

Nobody ever asked to see my driver's license.

27. I like how you used the word incidents
and not accidents. I don't believe in the term traffic accidents, because in my experience there is no such thing. You run a red light and kill someone that is manslaughter, you run a stop sign and kill someone that is man slaughter, illegal passing, following to close, driving under the influlence of alcohol and drugs, you kill someone it is manslaughter. I wish if any federal law could be passed is one that would place a minium 20 year prison sentence on each death caused by a driver driving like an asshole. I made a comment the other day to someone that I would feel safer being in Iraq then driving here in AL, then this article was posted.

10. Road rage hits Africa
Well, it turns out that road rage is not just a U.S. phenomenon.

Cape High Court prosecutor Carine Teunissen on Thursday called for "at least 20 years" jail for Mitchell's Plain magistrate Sithembele Elvis Tebe, who a year ago shot dead an inebriated motorist in a hit-and-run road rage incident in Khayelitsha.

<snip>

The case was a sequel to a late-afternoon collision in November, 2002, when Tebe chased after and shot dead intoxicated motorist Bongani Pendula, who had broadsided into Tebe's car at a T-junction and sped away.

15. Road rage driver convicted
"Former Jackson student was killed on prom night"

A jury deliberated three hours and 45 minutes Wednesday April 23 before convicting a Bellevue man of vehicular homicide in a much-publicized case of road rage that killed a girl on her prom night nearly a year ago.

<snip>

A jury of seven women and five men found that Arnold was reckless when he engaged in a dangerous game of pursuit and trying to pass another car on April 27, 2002. During the maneuvering, Arnold's Ford Explorer crossed the centerline of Highway 104 in south Edmonds and smashed into a Ford Mustang.

<snip>

Arnold has been free on $50,000 bail for the vehicular homicide charge. However, he was still being held in custody because of a probation violation from a Seattle drunken driving charge. Although no alcohol was involved in the April 27 crash, Arnold was prohibited from driving a vehicle that didn't have an ignition-locking device that would keep him from driving after drinking.

The Explorer had no such device.

17. Man killed with own car by his designated driver (IN)
Todd Birch apparently knew he was too intoxicated to drive, but he gave his car keys to the wrong person, authorities said.

Shortly after leaving a Downtown bar early Thursday, the 24-year-old man died after he was run over by his own car.

Liza Besser, Birch's 22-year-old girlfriend, told police she was driving to pick up Birch about 1:40 a.m. after they both walked out of the bar when she hit him.

"She knew he was kind of lagging behind. Next thing she knows, she feels this lump or bump," said Indianapolis Police Sgt. William Weber....

20. DWIGHT SMITH (Tampa Bay Bucs) booked for Road Rage today.

A 24-year-old Tampa man was charged with one felony count of Aggravated Assault Wednesday afternoon after he brandished a handgun during a moving confrontation with another motorist on the city's primary east/west traffic artery in "drive- time" traffic.

DWIGHT SMITH (08-13-78) was taken into custody by Clearwater Police Patrol Officers shortly after the 4:12 p.m. "road rage" incident on Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard (State Road 60). Smith, a defensive back with the National Football League's Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was booked into the Pinellas County Jail.

According to investigating officers, Smith was driving a white Cadillac Escalade in the median (inside) lane of westbound Gulf-to-Bay when he and a motorist in the curb lane (the outside of three lanes) both began to move into the center lane of the highway. Each driver apparently felt he had the right of way, but both drivers avoided a collision.

However, when Smith and the driver of a Chrysler van, John Schultz (07-05-59) of 1536 Linwood Avenue in Clearwater, stopped at the traffic signal on Gulf-to-Bay at Hampton Road, they exchanged shouted words and profanities. It was at this point that Smith brandished a 9-millimeter semi-automatic handgun. (According to Smith, he "displayed" the gun because the other driver was being aggressive; according to Schultz, the driver in the Cadillac "pointed the gun" at him. Beyond this discrepancy, the two men had pretty much the same set of facts to share with investigators).

28. That's something a lot of folks seem to not understand
When I have firearms in my vehicle I double up on my commitment to remaining calm and non-confrontational. Getting into a firefight or going to jail for brandishing a gun (or worse) are not situations I seek, nor do I harbor any secret wish for them to occur.

21. Survey finds Coast road rage 'hot bed'

Friday, 16th April 2004.

80% of drivers have been victims and it's even worse for our cyclists

THE Sunshine Coast has been identified as a "hot bed'' of road rage, with 80% of local drivers claiming they have been victims of aggressive behaviour.

A recent survey by insurance company AAMI found many Coast motorists were scared of increasingly aggressive drivers.

"Eight in 10 Sunshine Coast motorists say they have been subjected to some form of road rage or anti-social driving behaviour,'' said AAMI spokesman Mike Sopinski.

"Seven in 10 say they have been subjected to rude gestures from other drivers and almost as many say they have been tailgated.
