Cops' guns no match for gang-bangers' AK-47s (San Francisco)

Ballistics experts are analyzing the AK-47 semiautomatic rifle used in the killing of San Francisco police Officer Isaac Espinoza to determine whether it was used in any of the other assault-weapon shootings that have surged across parts of San Francisco in the past six months, law enforcement sources say.

Investigators hope to match bullet casings from the weapon to other bullet casings found at the scenes of as many as a dozen other shootings involving AK-47s.

Terence Clark, the San Francisco group supervisor for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, declined to discuss details of the Espinoza murder investigation, but said: "There have been a number of shootings in that area with that type of weapon.''

In fact, according to one police source, AK-47s have emerged recently as "the gun of choice'' among San Francisco's gang-bangers.

And it's sending a sobering chill throughout the Police Department. Some cops, who are armed only with .40-caliber Beretta handguns, say they feel like walking targets.

Apparently she has a special right to defend herself that nobody else in entitled to. In fact, while she was mayor of San Francisco, she possessed the ONLY concealed firearms permit (presumably self-assigned) in the city.

47. Another failure of the drug war

The drug war cannot be separated from the gun control issue. Whatever some people say about gun owners, this is clearly not the local shooting club causing problems. Drug prohibition financially rewards violence. Do I have to mention that parole need not be a space-saving measure in prisons? Not with this audience I would hope.

Hang on, was this weapon fully automatic, or only semi? The article posted here says semi-automatic but other articles I have found refer to the weapon as being fully automatic.

Police have said the violence began after the pair of officers approached a man acting suspiciously outside 1330 Newhall St. He turned to face them and opened fire with an automatic weapon, according to investigators who also reported finding such a weapon on Palou Avenue.


I have found that news reports are often not particularly accurate on the subject.

I'm suprised the district attorney hasn't asked for the death penalty.

Either way this officer is dead. I feel for his family.
