GUNS IN THE NEWS--April 26, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Man brandishing gun shot, killed by CHP
"California Highway Patrol officers shot and killed a man brandishing a gun at a gas station near Sunol Saturday afternoon, according to an Alameda County sheriff's spokeswoman.
The officers had responded to a call relayed by county sheriff's officials about 5:30 p.m. reporting that a man was deliberately ramming his Chevrolet truck into a pole in front of the gas pumps at the Food Mart gas station on Andrade Road at Sheridan Road in unincorporated Alameda County, a CHP spokesman said.
When officers arrived at the gas station, a man exited the truck, walked away from the vehicle and then reached into his waistband and displayed a handgun, sheriff's officials said."

2. Man dead in campground shooting (OH)
"A Sunday-night shooting in Scioto Township left one man dead and another arrested at gunpoint and facing murder charges.
Matthew Love, 47, has been charged with murder in the death of David A. Pickell, Ross County Sheriff Ron Nichols said. Pending the investigation, he could face more charges.
“This is just a preliminary investigation,” Nichols said. “He will be arraigned Monday in municipal court.”
Pickell, who was in his early 40s, lived nearby on Alum Cliff Road and was shot twice with a .44-caliber black powder revolver. It appeared as though Pickell had been shot in the chest."

3. A terrorist targets liberals
"Regular readers know I've already discussed ad nauseam the Bush administration's failure to take domestic terrorism seriously (and will have more tomorrow, I hope, on my current series discussing the broader ramifications and consequences of that). Some of you may recall that I've also repeatedly voiced concern that right-wing extremists may be planning violence against liberals this summer and fall and how it might affect the coming election.
Both of those concerns, it seems, have coalesced in the arrest last week of an Illinois man named Michael J. Breit for plotting the deaths of government officials:
But what remains especially disturbing about this case is that, once again, an obvious case of domestic terrorism has received so little attention.
Information about this case is nowhere to be found at the Web sites of either the FBI or the Justice Department -- though of course, both carry voluminous reports discussing threats from international terrorists. And of course, the FBI has a full phalanx of reportage on various aspects of "eco-terrorism," which is currently the agency's prime domestic-terrorism focus.
Also unanswered in the Breit case is the lingering question that almost certainly would be raised were we talking about the arrest of a Muslim man: Is there any evidence that his plans to employ 15 other conspirators to gun down Democrats proceeded beyond the mere fantasy stage? As with the Texas cyanide bomb case, there seems to be relatively little concern about the possibility of active and uncaught co-conspirators."

The victim, also a 16-year-old boy, was shot in the face and taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition, Urquhart said.
"It appears at this point to be accidental," Urquhart said. "

9. Partygoers at Charlotte park hear fatal gunshot
"Hundreds of people were at Hornets Nest Park Saturday when police say gunfire rang out, leaving one man fatally wounded and onlookers scurrying for cover.
Despite the number of people at the northwest Charlotte park, police say few have talked to police about what they saw, and no one has been charged.
"There were about 500 people there," said Detective Steve Furr, a homicide investigator. "But so far, about three people have come forward. That's frustrating." "

Police said the shooting occurred when two men got into an argument at a southeast Lincoln house. A bullet struck Cooper after hitting one of the men, Nolan Jenkins, 22, in the head.

Jenkins was reported in fair condition Sunday night. Another 22-year-old man was arrested in the shooting.

Nebraska athletic director Steve Pederson said Cooper was shot during a gathering at her home.

16. Officials: Road Rage Leads To Drive-By Shooting
"A drive-by shooting in northwest Harris County sent six family members to a hospital early Monday morning. Officials said road rage was the motive behind the shooting.
Harris County officials said someone shot at a pickup truck carrying six people in the 10000 block of Veterans Memorial around 2:30 a.m. after the truck's driver reportedly changed lanes.
Authorities ruled the motive for the shooting to road rage. They said the shooter got upset after the pickup truck changed lanes.
Five people inside the truck, including the driver, were shot, according to police. The truck then crashed into a ditch, injuring another passenger. "
