GUNS IN THE NEWS--May 18. 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

8. Woman held in shooting (CO)
A 24-year-old woman surrendered to police after two people were shot - killing one - in an Englewood home early Monday.
Teresa Spitz was arrested after she walked into the Englewood police station shortly after the shooting and talked with detectives.
"They talked to her for a while, and then she asked for a lawyer," police spokesman Jim Ulrich said. Spitz could face charges of murder and attempted murder, but specific charges are pending, Ulrich said.
Inside the home, officers found one woman dead and a man suffering from gunshot wounds. A gun was recovered, but police had not determined whether it was the murder weapon."

10. Pistol incident under review (OH)
"BELLVILLE -- Parents and administrators in the Clear Fork school district are working together to gauge the fallout from an April 30 incident in which a sixth-grader brought a loaded handgun to school.
At about 10 a.m. April 30, two students came to the principal's office and said a sixth-grade student had a handgun. The school locked down immediately and called 911. Brown and another administrator went into the suspected classroom and ordered the student to place his hands on his desk. They found a loaded 9mm handgun under the waistband of his pants, took the weapon from the boy and secured it before handing it over to a Richland County Sheriff's deputy.
"It only took 12 minutes from the time those two other students came to the office until we had the gun secured," Brown said. "But to say that no one was in danger is inaccurate. Anytime a student comes to school with a weapon everyone is in danger." "

Quick...what right wing lobbying group that has odious nutcase Grover Norquist on its board publishes a gun magazine for kids?

"PITTSBURGH -- A man whose son was killed in the Columbine High School shootings literally walked in his child's shoes to the National Rifle Association convention, where he hoped Vice President Dick Cheney would address the federal assault weapons ban set to expire in September.
Tom Mauser, whose son Daniel was killed with an assault weapon in the Littleton, Colo., killings five years ago Tuesday, said continuing the ban is common sense.
Assault weapons "are the weapons of gangs, drug lords and sick people," Mauser said before his three-block march to the convention, which runs through Sunday. "It is a weapon of war and we don't want this war on our streets."
Mauser entered the convention hall where the NRA was meeting, but was turned away by a security guard as several conventioneers applauded. A couple of conventioneers yelled "Get a life" and "Vote for Bush." "

12. Court will decide nature of death of Sherman's son (WI)
"One year to the date that Ray Sherman II, the 14-year-old son of a Green Bay Packers (news) assistant coach, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, his family will be in court Tuesday seeking to clear his name from stigmas attached to suicide.
Judge Richard Dietz will hear arguments in a civil proceeding in Brown County (Wis.) Circuit Court, that the Shermans hope will lead to the death being officially classified as an accident.
In a hearing expected to last at least three days, attorney Avi Berk will present testimony from three experts in forensics and/or suicide and findings from the Green Bay Police Department.
Sherman II was found in the garage of the family's rented duplex on May 18, 2003, wounded by a .38-caliber handgun owned by his father.
Sherman says he believes his son was playing with the gun, which was not properly locked up. He charges that Klimek mishandled the case and rushed to judgment."

That man ended up taking his own life with a single gunshot, police told News2Houston.
Another man in the truck was thrown from the vehicle during the collision. "

14. Man Accused Of Shooting Former Co-Worker With Rifle (PA)
"A prosecutor says a Coatesville, Pa., man accused of firing a .22-caliber rifle at the home of a former co-worker, injuring her in the arm, did so because he blamed her for vandalism to his truck.
Joshua Patton, 25, is charged with multiple counts of attempted homicide and other offenses.
Assistant District Attorney Ann Marie Wheatcraft said in her opening statement Monday that Patton drove to the home of Daveenia Smith on September 21 and fired four shots from his truck at a group sitting on the front porch."

15. Schools locked down as man shot nearby (NV)
"A middle school and an elementary school were locked down for about three hours this morning after a teen shot a man in the shoulder on 28th Street at Stewart Avenue, police said.
The shooting occurred just shortly after 6 a.m. directly across the street from Roy W. Martin Middle School just east of downtown Las Vegas.
Officer Jose Montoya, Metro Police spokesman, said a man was loading an air compressor into a vehicle on Stewart in preparation for the work day when two boys, believed to be 13 to 15 years old, approached from a nearby alley.
Still on a cell phone with 911, the man followed the boys down the street at a distance until one of the boys turned and fired at least three shots at the man and then ran back down the alley, police said."

16. Deliveryman: 'It was my gun or his'(IN)
Marion County prosecutors will decide if any charges will be filed against a pizza deliveryman who killed an armed man during an apparent robbery attempt Monday night on the city's Far Eastside.

"I'm just satisfied it was him and not me," said Ronald B. Honeycutt, 38, of Carmel this morning.

Honeycutt said he pulled his gun and fired off all 15 rounds when, as he was about to get into his van, he turned and saw a man coming toward him.

"He said, "Hey, my guy," and as he said "Hey, my guy," he's lifting his arm up with his gun in his hand."
