GUNS IN THE NEWS - June 2, 2004
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:

1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.

3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, World Net Daily, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.

4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.

5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.

6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.

7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.

8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

Brother To Be Sentenced For Sister's Shooting Death

The mother of a murder victim is praying her daughter's killer gets the minimum sentence.

That's because the man responsible for her daughter's death is her own son.

Nicole Wright was just 17-years-old when she was shot and killed by her 19-year-old brother Sean.

Investigators said Wright was visiting her brother at his Northside home when she was shot last November.

MOULTRIE --
Police investigators arrested two Moultrie store owners on federal charges Tuesday in connection with a gun-running operation.

The arrests are the culmination of 25 months of investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Moultrie Police Department (MPD) Chief Investigator Sgt. Man charged with pointing gun at group

By SHARON MILLER
Bulletin Staff Writer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An Oklahoma man was arrested for terroristic threatening during the weekend after he allegedly pointed a gun at others in a group floating the Buffalo River with him, according to information from Marion County Sheriff Carl McBee.

McBee said Timothy Micheal Thompson, 32, was arrested by investigators from the Sheriff's Department and National Park Service rangers.

The arrest and subsequent charges were based on complaints made by campers and floaters at the Buffalo River Bridge Sunday night.

According to McBee's information, Thompson got into a dispute with others in the floating party. He said Thompson went to his vehicle, got a 9 mm pistol and pointed the gun at others in his group.

6. Lynn bar owner's gun permit yanked
Edited on Wed Jun-02-04 09:00 AM by MrBenchley

"LYNN -- A city bar owner's license to carry a concealed weapon has been suspended as a result of a March 31 gun-related incident at his Western Avenue establishment, which has been ordered closed.
Revere Police Chief Terry Reardon, the issuing authority for gun permits in that city, said he suspended Revere resident Martin Dolan's license to carry a firearm after receiving information from Lynn police and city licensing officials.
Dolan, owner of the T-Bone Rigatoni restaurant, at 939 Western Ave., appeared before the License Commission last week to explain why he was intoxicated in the establishment's parking lot after closing and why his shoulder holster was empty. Lynn police found the loaded handgun on a shelf in Dolan's unlocked office in the basement of the restaurant. "

"GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - A domestic dispute turned deadly early Wednesday in the suburbs west of Minneapolis, where a man was shot, a police chase ensued and the suspect in the earlier shooting was shot and killed by police.
A St. Louis Park police officer also was shot in the leg after the suspect rammed a police car in Golden Valley, authorities said.
McGowan said the series of events began around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday with a domestic dispute involving a suspect and his estranged wife in St. Louis Park.
Authorities said a man somehow got involved in that dispute and was shot and critically wounded.
Police then pursued the suspect for about two miles into Golden Valley, where the suspect rammed his vehicle into a police car and was killed in an exchange of gunfire."

9. Slaying victim shot repeatedly by biker gang member, court told
DON KOHLBAUER / Union-Tribune
"EL CAJON – A motorcycle gang member with a long history of violence pulled a .45-caliber pistol from his waistband outside a bar and fatally shot an unarmed man who had ties to a rival gang, prosecutors said yesterday.
Ray Nolan Waldron, 29, is being tried in El Cajon Superior Court in the Sept. 27 shooting death of David "L.J." Florentine, 56, shortly after midnight outside an East Bradley Avenue bar just outside El Cajon.
Waldron, a member of the Mongols motorcycle gang, "shot repeatedly at L.J. Florentine in the parking lot of Kelly's Pub" after a brief verbal confrontation, prosecutor Gordon Paul Davis said in his opening statement.
Waldron also shot a second man, who was hit in a leg, Davis said. Florentine was hit with five bullets and died at the scene. "

10. Model/Actress shot in subway
"An up-and-coming actress was shot and wounded aboard a midtown subway Tuesday afternoon by a mystery gunman, police said.
Monica Meadows, 23, was sitting on a northbound W train when the gunman, described by witnesses as scruffy-looking with a medium build, stood up and opened fire, a single small-caliber bullet striking Meadows in the shoulder and exiting.
Her ex-boyfriend, who joined her current boyfriend and a female friend at her bedside late Tuesday, said Meadows told him there was an argument on the train in which she was not involved.
Police said the witnesses they interviewed did not report seeing or hearing an argument, but they did not rule out the possibility that Meadows, seated between two men when she was shot, was not the intended target."

http://www.spokesmanreview.com/allstories-news-story.asp?date=060104&ID=s1525429

"As Cooper, 33, and the California man argued over the quality of the work, Cooper pulled what officers described as a “Crocodile Dundee” knife, which was 1 1/2 feet long. He struck the California man in the head with the knife, police said. Uncowed by the Spokane man's bold but somewhat primitive technique, the California man retrieved the .357 from his car, police said. Cooper then opted to leave, police said."

"A 16-year-old Anchorage boy has been arrested and charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of another teenager over the weekend, according to court papers filed in the case.
Raymond Watson also has been charged with tampering with physical evidence, the document says. The charging documents were filed in Anchorage District Court.
Terrance Price, 17, died early Saturday after being shot in the chest in an apartment in south Mountain View, Anchorage police said.
The court papers, filed Sunday, say witnesses told police that Watson and Price were alone in a bedroom in the apartment when a shot was fired and Price came out screaming. Price lived for at least four more hours and was able to talk to police and paramedics, the court document says."
