GUNS IN THE NEWS - June 8, 2004
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:

1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.

3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, World Net Daily, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.

4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.

5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.

6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.

7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.

8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Trial begins for shooting suspect (PA)
"An Erie man accused of shooting his girlfriend in the shoulder had loaded the gun to shoot himself, a public defender told a jury Monday.
Paul Timothy West, 52, faces a first-degree assault charge in the non-lethal shooting. Prosecutors filed a motion to dismiss a second-degree attempted murder charge.
West and his girlfriend of a year, Elizabeth Tillinghast, were on the outs, so West cooked her pork chops for dinner Sept. 12 so the two could discuss their future, public defender Kristin Johnson told the jury during opening statements. But instead of meeting West for dinner, Tillinghast went with friends to a Lafayette bar and when the couple met later a fight ensued.
West placed a bullet in the chamber of a .22-caliber target pistol and accidentally shot Tillinghast in the right shoulder, Johnson said.
Prosecutor Karen Peters told the jury a different story that included an enraged West dragging Tillinghast up the stairs of his home spouting threatening remarks. As Tillinghast lay on the floor begging for her life, West loaded the gun and without saying a word fired at her. "

Remark about car led to shooting, family says

BY SUSAN SZALEWSKI

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

Raul J. Shaw made a comment about a woman's car - its tire rims in particular - that her boyfriend apparently did not like. That is what led to Shaw's being shot and critically injured Wednesday on an Interstate 480 bridge, a cousin of Shaw's said.

Police have said Shaw apparently made comments about the woman, an employee at Mickey's Razzle Dazzle in Council Bluffs.

The 24-year-old Shaw of Omaha might have acted cocky that night, said his cousin Marti Arellano-Madrigal, also of Omaha. "But surely he didn't deserve this," she said of the shooting.

Shaw was shot in the head about 2 a.m. Wednesday as both men drove across the bridge toward Omaha.

Neighbors Angered After Shooting in Skating Rink Parking Lot

By Bonnie Druker

Two men went to the hospital after an early morning shooting at a popular west side roller skating rink. United Skates of America has had trouble in the past.

“What we were told from witnesses they got into a disturbance resulted in shots fired over a parking spot in the parking lot,” said Lt. Paul Ciesielski, Indianapolis Police Department.

Two men ended up in the hospital after the shootout: Rodney Robertson, 25, and Kevin Jennings, 22.

Marie Conrad works next door to United Skates. She said the shooting is another example of why United Skates is not safe anymore. “I think it's very sad people would deface property like that. It's wrong,” she said. Conrad says her boss at Selco Engineering wants to put up a fence to avoid damage to his building and abandoned cars left in his parking lot.

the men involved had stabbed each other instead. Evidently it's not the violence that bothers people but the noise.

5. Man Charged In Cousin's Shooting Death (AR)
"An Ashley County man faces a charge of first degree murder in connection with the Sunday, June 6, shooting death of his first cousin, according to the sheriff's office.
Chief Investigator Jim Culp identified the victim as Jerry Neal Pamplin, 41, 150 Ashley 909 Road, Montrose. Albert Dale Caine, 32, 3211 Highway 82 East, Montrose, of the Snyder community, is in the Ashley County jail charged with first degree murder.
According to Culp, the sheriff's received two 9-1-1 calls about the shooting, one from Caine, around 10 a.m. Culp said it appeared that Caine and Pamplin, first cousins, had problems prior to the shooting.
He said they confronted one another outside a pickup truck in a driveway in Snyder and, according to witnesses, Pamplin grabbed the metal end of a shovel with no handle and swung it a couple of times. He said two shots were fired, one striking Pamplin and another apparently striking the back of the truck. A 9mm semi-automatic pistol believed to be the murder weapon was seized as evidence, Culp said."

7. Officials: Suspect In UNCW Fatal Shooting Dead
"CHEROKEE, N.C. -- A man who tried to elude authorities at a roadblock in western North Carolina and who was found dead in a creek was John Peck, the suspect in the fatal shooting of a college student, a sheriff's deputy said Tuesday.
Deputies found Naujoks lying on the sidewalk of her apartment complex Friday night with gunshot wounds. Witnesses said a woman was banging on doors as a man chased her with a rifle, shooting her three times.
Peck was arrested in April on charges of stalking Naujoks and making harassing calls to her. A court hearing on those charges had been scheduled for Wednesday.
On April 26, Naujoks filed for a court protective order, stating that Peck had threatened to get a gun from his father's house to kill himself on her doorstep. The request also said that Peck left 17 obscene phone messages at Naujoks' mother's house in Ohio and that Peck was following Christen Naujoks around school and stopping her from entering her car.
Peck was ordered to stay away from Naujoks and forbidden to possess a firearm. A later court document indicated he had enrolled in anger management and sexual offender treatment programs."
