GUNS IN THE NEWS - June 15 - 16, 2004
Edited on Wed Jun-16-04 08:29 AM by CO Liberal
Since I was laid up yesterday due to an epidural injection (and my home PC is in the shop), I was unable to start the regular daily GITN thread. So lets use this one to post stories from today or yesterday. - Wayne

* * * * *

Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:

1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.

3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.

4 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.

5 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.

6 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.

7 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.

8 - If you object to these guidelines, do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

2. strange choice of drive-by vehicle
At least the kid who got shot is going to make it, thank heavens.

You had an epidural? Gosh... Isn't that something they do for severe pain? How are you doing?

6. Feeling Better, Thanks
I've been involved in three motor vehicle accidents in the past four years. As a result I have two herniated discs in my neck, and two in my lumbar area. One of the discs in my lumbar area puts pressure on the sciatic nerve, so I have chronic pain in my right leg.

The epidural injections help lessen the pain, and delay the inevitable surgeries....

9. Goodness gracious
Get better, mate, you hear? The significant other and I were t-boned just the other day. Had that lady been going any faster I might have been seriously hurt. The first thing she did was turn on her cell phone and started talking to someone. I tried to tell her "lady you have coolant and fuel leaking from under your car! Get out!" But she kept yacking until the police showed up. We're fine though a little shaken up.

10. My Last Accident Was a T-Bone
The first two were rear-end collisions.

In the first (March 2000), I was in an Isuzu Hombre doing 55 on the interstate when I was rear-ended by someone doing between 90 and 100 who claimed he fell asleep - at 1:30 in the afternoon. As a result, I received two herniated discs in my lumbar area.

The second accident (December 2002), I was stopped at a light signaling to make a left turn onto the interstate when someone approached to fast, rear-ended my Suzuki Swift and pushed me into the Buick LeSabre in front of me. It re-aggravated the previous injuries.

In the most recent accident (February 2004), I was in my Chevy S10 going north on a two-lane road following a Ford Ranger. The Ranger pulled over onto the shoulder, and as I approached it the driver attempted a U-turn in front of me. I slammed on the brakes and swerved to the right to avoid hitting him. He kept on coming and I ended up T-boning him in the south-bound lane. It did $5,500 damage to my S10, and untold damage to my back. I now have two herniated discs in my neck, and several vertebrae that are knocked out of alignment.

13. there are some terrible, terrible drivers out there!
Honestly, there are quite a lot of people who have no business whatsoever behind the wheel, because they are simply awful drivers. Sucks that you had to encounter three of them.

I'm sorry about your injuries, and I hope the epidurals keep working for you.

14. that woman was a complete idiot
Her car was leaking fuel, and she still refused to leave it? Geez, what a fool. Gasoline vapors can ignite in a flash.

Thank heavens you and your SO weren't maimed or killed!

FWIW, one bit of info that I've never forgotten is this: after an auto accident, always get out of the vehicle if there's any chance that the fuel line was damaged, and then walk away from the car towards the front and keep going til you're a safe distance away. The reason, I was told, is that the placement of the gas tanks makes the back and rear-side areas of the car the most dangerous places you could choose to linger in.

It sounds logical, so I believe it.

5. Back Update
Thanks for asking, FS... :-)

I had another epidural injection on my lower back yesterday - the pain seems to have lessened, and I'm having far less sciatic pain in my right leg. I waiting to hear from my other doctor's office about my next epidural for my neck. (I have two herniated discs up there, and two in my lumbar area, including one that is causing the sciatic pain.)

As long as the epidural injections are providing relief, my doctors are inclined to continue them - it's far less invasive than other techniques. But if they stop having any effect, then I may be looking at surgery....

Either way, it looks like I have a semi-rough road ahead.

7. Drive-by shooting was a lie, police say (Kansas City)
Edited on Wed Jun-16-04 10:15 AM by CO Liberal
The story doesn't make it clear if it's the Kansas City in Missoouri, or the one in Kansas. Either way, it will be interesting to see how this story turns out - was the 14-year-old killed by reckless use of a gun in a drive-by shooting, or careless storage of a gun? - Wayne

PS to Mods - I included two more paragraphs than the usual four in order to include what I felt was inportant information. But I urge everyone to follow the link to get the full story.

Drive-by shooting was a lie, police say

By TANYANIKA SAMUELS The Kansas City Star

A 14-year old Kansas City boy reportedly killed during a drive-by shooting actually died after a friend accidentally shot him in an upstairs bedroom, authorities alleged Tuesday.

Jackson County prosecutors said that 17-year old Joshua Carter was playing with a handgun in the home at 7138 Olive St. when the gun went off. A bullet struck Keyon Steward in the chest.

Carter, however, is sticking to the drive-by shooting claim and maintaining his innocence, court documents read.

<snip>

On Monday, Keyon's mother, Lisa Steward, spent much of the day at police headquarters. She eventually told police that she was upstairs in her bedroom that afternoon when she heard a loud “pop,” court records stated. She saw four boys carrying Keyon out of another bedroom and down the stairs, and one of them told her that her son had been shot, according to court records.

Two other witnesses said Carter had been playing with a handgun, court records read. They said they heard a “pop,” looked over at Carter then saw that Keyon had been shot in the chest, according to court records. The witnesses said they rushed the injured boy to the front porch and called police.

Carter, however, told police that he was in an upstairs room with two other boys when he heard a “shot” and then heard a car “speed off,” court records stated. Carter said he ran downstairs and discovered that Keyon had been shot, according to court records. He maintains that his friend was the victim of a drive-by, court documents read.

Man arrested in shooting death of girlfriend

Jun. 15, 2004 09:25 PM

A man suspected in the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend surrendered to police on Tuesday night alongside his attorney, authorities said.

Keith F. Williams, 40, was expected to be booked into a Maricopa County jail on suspicion of first-degree murder in the death of Shana M. Kowalski, a mother of three.

Williams is accused of shooting Kowalski early Monday at her house, near 44th Street and Greenway Road, after bringing home their 3-year-old son from a weekend visit, police said.
