...is that anti-gun people claim that civilians only own and carry guns out of paranoia.

Then they erect giant billboards instructing you to fear your neighbor's rifle.

On edit--when rocket propelled grenades are outlawed, only outlaws will have have RPG's. You never know when you'll need an RPG to, say, stop a grizzly bear in downtown Philly.

10. So now people are "idiots" because they aren't immersed in the
gun culture. Thanks for clarifying that.

I'm really impressed when people can rattle off make, models, serial numbers, gauges, calibers, and muzzle velocities.

Impressed that they don't have something better to do with their time.

13. They aren't idiots for being ignorant about guns.
They are idiots for being ignorant about guns and trying to present themselves as a legitmate authority on what our gun policies should be. You would think that a group trying so hard to get "assault weapons" banned could at least clearly define what an "assault weapon" is and exactly why it is specifically "more lethal" than a "conventional" gun.

Instead, they resort to distortions, outright lies and fearmongering propaganda to get their point across. You don't have to be a mechanical engineer to understand that one shot per trigger pull is not "spray firing" or that the purpose of a pistol grip is not so that you can fire the weapon from your hip. These details aren't "gun porn" minutae...they are major planks in the anti-"assault weapon" platform that simply don't make sense.

By the way, nobody here is trying to impress you.

8. You're fooling yourself...
...if you actually think the Assault Weapons Ban took AK-47's off the street. It doesn't apply to machine guns and only banned cosmetic non-mechanical features on semi-automatics.

The Brady/VPC irrational "fear your neighbor" campaign is bleeding the Democratic party dry. I hope you guys realize this before it's too late.

It might be too late already.

Seeing how Sugarmann runs the VPC, and stated on NPR that the renewal or end of the AWB wont make a damn bit a difference to those guns' availability, maybe he will try to educate them.

20. He must have gotten through to jointogether.org
Edited on Wed Jun-16-04 11:13 AM by slackmaster
They're (predictably) calling for a new ban with a stricter definition of "assault weapon", but now they're openly admitting the 1994 AWB failed to achieve its objectives.

...The 1994 AWB prohibited the manufacture, transfer, and possession of 19 specific semiautomatic assault weapons, such as AK-47s, AR15s, UZIs, MAC-10s and TEC DC-9s. However, the gun industry immediately began to evade it by making cosmetic changes to weapons, renaming them, and marketing them as so-called "post-ban" models, even though the post-ban models are functionally identical to those banned by the 1994 law. Accordingly, more makes and models of assault weapons are available today than were in 1994 before the ban. (emphasis added)

http://www.jointogether.org/gv/news/alerts/reader/0,2061,571572,00.html

It must take some powerful self-deception to believe that if the 1994 ban produced a proliferation of new types of "assault weapons" that a more stringent feature-based definition wouldn't result in exactly the same thing happening again. People are creative creatures. Of course what's really going on here is definition creep; a slippery slope that would, if taken to its absurd extreme, define any kind of firearm as an "assault weapon". I don't mean to imply that's what the banners really want, but lack of a clear stopping point assures that the debate will never end, which ensures continued employment for the Brady Center's lawyers, the VPC's propagandists, et al.

George Orwell had a clear vision of reality, not a paranoid distortion of it.

21. "The Assault Weapons Ban is fantastic and must be renewed..."
"...that's why there are dozens of new types of assault weapons on the market."

Again, I'd sure like to get a concrete definition of exactly what these people consider to be an "assault weapon." Because they defined it in 1994 and apparently that definition wasn't good enough. As far as I can tell, the only difference between the 1994 legislation and the proposed "strengthening" is that now they consider the location of the magazine to be what makes a rifle assaultish.

It sounds to me that all semi-auto rifles are "assault weapons" to them. If this is the case, they are really pouring the oil on that slippery slope.

25. They're making the same mistake they made in 1994
The same strategic error by which all zealots shoot themselves in the foot: Demanding too much and getting nothing as a result.

I can't figure out what they mean by "assault weapon" other than any semiautomatic that takes detachable magazines and/or has a military geneaology. Which covers just about all semiautos.

The 10-year renewal Senator Feinstein is proposing has a small chance of success. Any effort to make a stricter ban is probably DOA.

26. As slackmaster said...
The photo of the AK-47 is pointless because semi-auto AK variants were just as legal before the ban as they were after it. And the AWB has nothing to do with full-autos (which is by definition what an "AK-47" is).

So exactly how will AWB renewal keep these scary guns out of your neighbors' hands, if it never did so in the first place?

29. If some politician would just speak out about their blatant lies...
...they'd vanish right into thin air. It seems that everyone (GOP and Dem) is walking on eggshells with the AWB simply because of the negative imagery the words "assault weapon" conjure.

Also, a lot of the vocal anti-gun advocates are people who lost loved ones (or were injured) by guns...so there's a sympathy factor at work. People are reluctant to slam a "victim," no matter how wrong that victim might be.

used a nasty, desperate measure bypassing committees to get the thing up for a vote. That usually never works. She is obsessed though, so we'll see. Even so, the House will kill it. I give it under 25% chance of being extended. Should be 0%, but you never know.

32. agenda is clear as day
The blathering about a "strengthened" ban has been in the works for a while. Did anyone really in good faith think the war was only against pistol grips? :eyes:

http://www.csgv.org/docUploads/awb%5Freport%2Epdf

Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence's "Killing Machines - The Case For Banning Assault Weapons" (dated Sept. 2003):

p.9: "The capacity of any gun with a detachable magazine, therefore,
is limited only by the number and size of pre-loaded magazines the
shooter is willing to carry. Accordingly, any gun with the ability to accept
a detachable magazine satisfies the “high capacity” component of the “assault weapon” definition."

Let's be honest. We all know that once these are banned:

Any manufacturer of these:

Will be decried as "evading the ban" :eyes: because they are putting:

centerfire rifles
that accept detachable magazines
that fire "as fast as you can jerk the trigger"

"back on the streets" :puke:
