It strikes me that the problem -- from your perspective -- isn't that MrBenchley thinks that "If you're pro-gun, you must be an idiot right-winger", it's that the idiot right-wingers are saying that if you're a liberal, you must be advocating the confiscation of firearms in private hands.

If being "liberal" were as important to me as being pro-choice, and I knew of a bunch of fascists saying that only fascists are pro-choice and no liberals are pro-choice, then I think I might want to dispute that claim. I might just want to make sure that people to whom reproductive choice is important don't go off half-cocked and vote fascist because of what they hear.

Of course, me, if the fascists were defining "pro-choice" as meaning that the local dog groomer ought to be permitted to perform abortions on his/her kitchen table, I think I'd be disputing that proposal and demonstrating how my "liberal" definition of reproductive choice was just a little bit more civilized. Amazingly, that logic applies pretty well to being "pro-gun". Well ... in the mind of what I'd call a liberal, anyhow.
