GUNS IN THE NEWS - July 7, 2004
Edited on Wed Jul-07-04 07:03 AM by CO Liberal
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:

1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.

3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.

4 - Please try whenever possible to provide links to web sites that do not require you to subscribe to the site to read the story. If a subscription site is the only source you can find for a story, please note that fact in your message so people can decide whether they want to follow the link to read the entire story.

5 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.

6 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.

7 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.

8 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.

9 - If you object to these guidelines (or the basic concept of the "Guns In The News" thread), do yourself and everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Mother, son accused of firing gun, beating teens on bus (MS)
registration required…
SHAW, Miss. — Bolivar County authorities have filed charges against a girl's mother and brother, accusing them of boarding a bus on which the girl had been involved a fight, firing a gun and striking several teenagers with a heavy object.
The girl's mother allegedly fired a handgun once, and the girl's brother allegedly struck several kids in the back and head with a crowbar or piece of pipe and busted windows that cut several more, Thompson said.
The privately operated bus was carrying about 20-30 Greenville-area teenagers home from a Greenville skating rink when two girls began fighting, Thompson said.
"One of the girls apparently contacted her mother or brother by cell phone, and they met the bus when the driver stopped at Johnson's Grocery in Shaw," Thompson said."

2. Gun advocates seek to stop enforcement of firearm ban (CA)
"SAN FRANCISCO -- Gun-rights supporters filed legal papers in federal court Tuesday seeking to block Contra Costa County from enforcing its controversial ban on the sale of .50-caliber rifles.
Attorneys representing a coalition of gun enthusiasts, manufacturers, publishers and retailers will appear in U.S. District Court in San Francisco Aug. 12 requesting a preliminary injunction.
A month ago, the groups sued the county in federal court, charging that the ordinance violates First Amendment free speech rights and is pre-empted by state law.
On April 6, the Board of Supervisors approved the law prohibiting the sale of .50-caliber rifles in the unincorporated county. The motion seeks to stop the county from enforcing its new law until the merits of the lawsuit can be heard in court.
The lawsuit argues that the county ordinance infringes on free speech by effectively barring magazines and newsletters that happen to contain advertisements for .50-caliber rifles. "

Free speech?!? Gee, he said, I wonder why the crooked gun industry and their loony-tunes supporters didn't sue under the Second Amendment, seeing as how they ALL claim loud and long it gives them an individual right to these guns?

You don't suppose this rancid bunch all forgot there was a Second Amendment, do you? Don't you think one of our "pro-gun democrats" ought to remind them?

3. Girl, 17, is hurt in gun accident (MD)
Another family made safer by guns...

"An 18-year-old playing with a handgun he grabbed out of his father's safe accidentally shot a teenage girl yesterday afternoon in his Woodbine home, Howard County police said.
The girl, 17, was standing in a first-floor bathroom when she was hit in the chest by a single bullet from the small-caliber gun fired accidentally by Benjamin M. Allen, said Pfc. Richard Malcolm, a Howard police spokesman.
Allen had taken out the gun to show the girl and three 18-year-old friends who had entered the house after swimming in a pool on the property, Malcolm said. "

4. Russian roulette gun had been stolen (ID)
"Boise police have determined the .38-caliber revolver Timothy Ray Smith used to fatally shoot himself during a game of Russian roulette Saturday morning was stolen during a car burglary in late June.
Detectives think Smith brought the gun to the party but were still investigating how he was connected to that burglary, police spokeswoman Lynn Hightower said. Detectives continued to interview witnesses Tuesday, she said.
Smith, 18, reportedly shot himself in the head about 1:40 a.m. Saturday during an underage drinking party in the 1100 block of Belmont Street, just south of the Boise State University campus. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died a short time later, according to police reports.
Witnesses told police the shooting occurred after Smith and another man got into a verbal dispute on the patio about who was tougher, which led to a game of Russian roulette."

5. 2 plead guilty in scheme to sell guns to gang (IL)
registration required

"Two men pleaded guilty to federal firearms offenses Tuesday in connection with a scheme to purchase semiautomatic pistols and other guns in Indiana and sell them to Chicago street gang members.
Craig Hughes, 32, of Indianapolis admitted in U.S. District Court in Chicago that he acted as a "straw purchaser" for the New Breeds street gang by falsely claiming to be the buyer when he purchased the weapons at an Indianapolis gun shop.
Between 1998 and 2001, Hughes bought 16 guns that he sold to co-defendant Cory Miles, 27, of Chicago, an admitted New Breeds gang member, and other members of the Chicago gang, said Assistant U.S. Atty. Virginia Kendall.
At least seven of those weapons were recovered in Chicago during investigations of various criminal activities, according to court records.
Among those was a .357 caliber revolver bought by Hughes just 14 days before Chicago police seized the handgun from a 17-year-old in 2000 after a shooting, the records show."
