i bought a mini-14 today. |
|
it's pretty sweet- has a scope already, leather buttpad, and a bipod.
and, before you say anything, mr benchley, it is registered with the federal government- i even got an instant background check.

The original m1a (m14) is 1200 bucks to purchase! I have a Springfield M1a and the recoil isn't bad at all (even with the original steel butt plate). I have heard bad things about the mini wandering around a target as the barrel heats up. Might be an old wives tale though.I guess you could say some swear by them and some swear at them.
Sounds like a good price and it should be a handy rifle to have.

3. "The A-Team"'s weapon of choice. Now you can expend thousands |

of rounds and hurl ten grenades and win the battle, without actually killing or maiming one single person.

10. A always thought they used M 14s. |
|
They were fully automatic, IIRC.
Do they make an automatic mini 14?

11. Yep, they were Mini-14s. Nickel plated w/ collapsable stocks and |
|
30-rd. magazines. I dunno if they make a full auto Mini 14 or not. They may have been modified for the show.

Full auto. That was a nice weapon. You'd think it would be hard to control but the rate of fire keeps the muzzle down. Does get pretty hot though.

|

Formerly known as BATF Form 4473.
The background check system (NICS) knows only that a check was conducted on you. It knows nothing about the firearm you bought.
BTW congratulations on your purchase. The Mini-14 is a fun if not spectacularly accurate rifle.

A Mini-14? You must be a white supremacist, don't you know Randy Weaver owned one of those? And Gordon Kahl used one to snuff a couple of cops in 79? It's a secret code isn't it? All Mini-14 owners are dangerous neo-nazis. Good thing it's registered, now when Feinstein is appointed Attorney General she can put you on the list. Anyway(I'm out of Bench mode) congratulations, the Mini is a good gun. Have a gunsmith glass bed the barrel for you and it will help with accuracy, just wait till Sept. 14, then you can attach an evil flashhider, then the gun will be an assault weapon!

the scope is so-so, but I have all kinds of mags ( some are 30 round capacity ) The height of absurdity is to tape two togehter - so you nave 60 round reversaibles... it adds a lot of weithgt to the gun!!

13. I've always liked the Mini-14 |
|
It was one of the first firearms that I owned.
As Slackmaster mentioned, the accuracy leaves much to be desired (and yet certain units of the NYC PD were issued them a while back). :eyes:
The thin light weight barrel heats up rather quickly.
There are after-market barrels that will improve the accuracy, but the cost is more than the entire firearm.

A folding stock (front and rear pistol grips) is good for rigging up a front carry/quick bearing arrangement like the Israelis use --- very nice.
There is a lot of other stuff too --- check out a gun show near you!
While I can't recommend the Mini-14 as a long distance weapon, everybody should have at least one.
Oh, and buy decent ammo, there is a lot of crap out there.
On edit: Congrats -- and good shooting!

I have a bunch of Federal "high performance" rounds, but I like the Israeli stuff too, at least for "regular" use.
Do check out the gun shows... the best prices and availability.
My very best to a fellow Dem. If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me. This is a very nice rifle, and I am happy for you!

19. 7.62 x 51 or x 63 sure, |
|
but x 39 --- no way, dude! 5.56 x 45 is better and lighter. Besides, in this hemisphere, it is 5.56 that is more likely to be picked up on the battlefield.
But then again, I will take the 7mm magnum over any of these rounds for long distance work --- yum, yum! (.460 and .50 are also very nice --- but very heavy.)

They are much more reliable than AR-15s to be sure, and there are a couple of really decent aftermarket barrels you can put on to turn it into a tack-driver.
That's a great price BTW! It seems that lately prices on all semi-autos are falling like crazy. But remember, if you do opt for re-barreling to make it as acurate as an AR - you may as well have purchased an AR in the first place.
Also, only 58 days until you can purchase brand new standard capacity magazines for that baby!
ETA: Don't tape your magazines together upside down - that's an amatuer move. You'll only damge the feed lips on the mags. Spend $10 and get the correct magazine straps if you feel the need to carry two mags on the gun at once.

|
bayonet lug....
pistol grip stock.....
and/or flash hider..... for your Mini-14,
if you want to chance the AWB....
Although the Mini-14, like the GARAND is specifically, BY NAME, exempted, if you start to "trick them out"....

DU rules state that anything that isn't to do with public policy or politics should be posted in the Lounge or the Meeting Room.
Or how about using somewhere outside DU (a POLITICAL website) when you are overwhelmed with the urge to boast about your shiny new gun?
