GUNS IN THE NEWS--July 26, 2004
As CO Liberal sez:
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:
1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.
2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.
3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.
4 - Please try whenever possible to provide links to web sites that do not require you to subscribe to the site to read the story. If a subscription site is the only source you can find for a story, please note that fact in your message so people can decide whether they want to follow the link to read the entire story.
5 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.
6 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.
7 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.
8 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.
9 - If you object to these guidelines (or the basic concept of the "Guns In The News" thread), do everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Man Held in Gun Death (CA)
registration required
A 74-year-old Simi Valley man was arrested during the weekend on suspicion of fatally shooting one man and injuring another, police said Sunday.
Robert Sorrells was arrested about 5 p.m. Saturday after the fatal shooting of Arthur De Long, 45, and the wounding of Edward Sanchez, 40, both of Simi Valley, at the Regency Lounge in Simi Valley, police said. De Long was shot in the back; Sanchez was hit in the face and back.
Responding to numerous 911 calls Saturday, Simi Valley police arrived at the lounge in the 1600 block of Los Angeles Avenue to find the two gunshot victims inside the bar, authorities said. Witnesses said the suspect had fled in a Volkswagen van."

2. Gunshot Goes Through Window Into Child's Closet (IL)
"MURPHYSBORO -- The Jackson County Sheriff's Department is investigating an apparently random shooting that landed a bullet in a 4-year-old girl's bedroom closet.
Craig and Tracy Stewart returned Saturday afternoon to their Cedar Road home in Somerset Township after camping at Lake Murphysboro. As they unloaded their camper, Tracy Stewart noticed the broken glass in their daughter's bedroom.
Tracy Stewart said she found the bullet inside her little girl's closet among her clothes. The bullet had smashed through the window and gone through the closet door opposite the window.
Stewart said she was especially disturbed because, by the light of the lamp that is always on in her daughter's room, it is apparent from outside the room is a child's bedroom. "

3. 15-Year-Old Girl Wounded in Saturday Shooting (OH)
"A 15-year-old girl, Leanna Marshall of 433 Hough Road, was shot around 4:30am Saturday morning on Mariette Road near the Village of Hallsville.
Deputies said 18-year-old Tyler A. Norman of 13639 Marietta Road -- where the shooting occurred -- fired a 9-mm pistol into the passenger-side door of the car in which Marshall was riding with the bullet going through her right thigh and then the calf of the left leg.
Sheriff Ron Nichols said the bullet was recovered in the car. He said Norman was arrested for felonious assault and the pistol confiscated. Marshall was treated and released from Adena Regional Medical Center. "

4. Troy man suffers gunshot wounds (NC)
Another glorious celebration of the Second Amendment...

"ROY - Troy Police Department officers are investigating a shooting in the South Main Street area of town early Saturday night that left one man in critical condition and his accused assailant in Montgomery County jail under $50,000 secured bond.
Troy Police Chief E.J. Phillips said Brian Junior Bowden, 32, of Troy, was taken by private car to the FirstHealth Montgomery Memorial Hospital about 7:15 p.m. Saturday night. Emergency room personnel notified the police at 7:56 p.m. that a man had been brought in with multiple gunshot wounds.
Phillips said Bowden was shot several times in the chest and legs with what appears to have been a handgun, but the weapon has not been positively identified. No motive has been established. Phillips said Bowden and Shipp apparently knew each other, but he had no information as to what led to the shooting. As far as officers have been able to determine, the shooting happened in the street."

9. Accused shooter saw UFOs (PA)
Doesn't seem that much weirder than some of the other crap gun owners post here on a daily basis...

"WEST CHESTER -- The attorney representing the man accused of shooting two sheriff’s deputies began to lay the groundwork for an insanity defense for his client.
Walter J. Rosengarth, 64, allegedly wounded the officers who had arrived at his home on the 400 block of Pierre Drive in East Marlborough on July 24, 2003, to serve him with an eviction notice. After the shooting, Rosengarth barricaded himself into his residence during a three-and-a-half-hour standoff with state police.
Rosengarth told both analysts stories about being poisoned by a neighbor, suffering from cancer though he never had been diagnosed and seeing a UFO hovering near Kennett Square."

Good thing he had a gun to "defend himself."

10. Man faces attempted murder charge after standoff (IA)
Another charmer....

"SIOUX CITY, Iowa A Sioux City man faces a number of charges, including attempted murder, after a shooting which led to a police standoff.
Forty-year-old Ryan Adams is accused of firing a shotgun at a person walking down the street early yesterday. According to police records, he allegedly shouted racial slurs before firing.
Police say Adams then went inside his house. When officers arrived, he refused to surrender. The standoff ended about three and a-half hours later after police went inside the house and arrested Adams."

Wonder how much that little celebration of the Second Amendment cost the taxpayers?

11. Mom Claims Deadly Shooting Was An Accident (PA)
"The mother of a 14-year-old boy who was fatally shot three days ago said a friend of her son told her the shooting was an accident.
Sheree Good said a 13-year-old boy, who hasn't been charged with a crime, told her he and her son, Anthony Oliver, had been playing with a .25 caliber pistol he had purchased for $50.
Police said they received calls from teenagers about 8 p.m. Friday saying Oliver had been shot with a BB gun, but when police arrived they found a .25 caliber pistol, a matching shell casing and bloody gloves. Oliver died less than an hour later at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Good said she went to the home of the alleged shooter in search of answers, and the boy told her the two had been playing. "

I didn't realize you could still buy pistols that cheaply. I guess the black market is more efficient than the legal market.

18. Oh, it is indeed unfortunate
but it happens and not a thing in this world is going to stop things like that from happening.

I'm still impressed that you can get a pistol for $50 on the street. I wonder if you could get one that cheap in a gun store.
