GUNS IN THE NEWS - July 27, 2004
Please try to adhere to the following voluntary guidelines, in order that we can have an orderly discussion of gun-related news topics:

1 - Feel free to add any CURRENT stories to this thread by replying to this message. In order to be considered current, stories should have been originally posted on the Internet within the previous 24 hours, or provide follow-up to a story that was previously posted on the J/PS board. EXCEPTION: On Mondays (since many people do not log in to DU over the weekend), stories can be posted from Saturday, Sunday, or Monday.

2 - Both pro-gun and anti-gun stories, editorials, and press releases are welcome in this thread, as long as they're current. Please do not post links to items from a few years back that support your position.

3 - Bear in mind that any links to extremely right-wing sites (such as Newsmax, CNS, or the Washington Times) or intentionally pro-gun or pro-control sites (such as the NRA or the Brady Campaign) are not considered reliable sources by many DU-ers. If at all possible, try to find a link for your story from a more mainstream source, such as a general-circulation newspaper or magazine site. If you choose to use a slanted site, be prepared for any negative feedback you may receive.

4 - Please try whenever possible to provide links to web sites that do not require you to subscribe to the site to read the story. If a subscription site is the only source you can find for a story, please note that fact in your message so people can decide whether they want to follow the link to read the entire story.

5 - Do not change story titles. In other words, if the Oskosh Gazette's web site runs a story titled "Two Killed in Holdup", the title of your message should read "Two Killed in Holdup". Don't change it to "Gun Owner Kills Two People", or anything else that changes the meaning of the story.

6 - If it's not clear from the title where the story occurred, add the city, state, or country in parentheses after the title.

7 - The person adding a news story to the "GITN" thread is allowed (and encouraged) to comment on that story, indicating their position on the topic being discussed. These comments can appear either at the beginning or end of the post; if possible, place comments in a different typeface so readers can separate the comments from the story. Others who wish to comment on a posted story can do so by replying to that story; this allows other readers to follow the comments by scrolling through the subthread.

8 - Please direct your comments to the story, rather than attacking the person posting the story or any person responding to the story. In accordance with DU rules, any message that appears to be a personal attack against another DU-er or a violation of any other DU rule will be reported to the moderators.

9 - If you object to these guidelines (or the basic concept of the "Guns In The News" thread), do yourself and everyone else a favor and go to another thread.

1. Man allegedly waved gun at ice cream man (WA)
Another glorious celebnration of the Second Amendment....

"EVERETT -- A standoff ended peacefully early Monday morning with a man who allegedly waved a semi-automatic pistol at the driver of an ice cream truck broadcasting music through his neighborhood.
Shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday, a local ice cream vendor drove through the Woodside Crossing Apartments with music playing through a loudspeaker, said Everett Police Sgt. Boyd Bryant.
A 63-year-old man came out of his apartment and allegedly pointed a gun at the ice cream vendor, who fled. When police officers were unable to persuade the man to come out of his apartment, Everett Police Tactical Unit members evacuated surrounding apartments and began negotiating with the man, police said."

Big shots in the national gun-control debate may party or hang out black crepe paper Sept. 13, when a 10-year ban on assault weapons is expected to end.

Area law enforcement officials expect it to be just another day on the streets.

*Snip*

"I haven't seen that the ban has made much of a difference," Jeff Wells said. He is a 15-year veteran of the Lake County coroner's office, which processes about 80 homicide scenes each year in which firearms are involved.

He said the number of victims riddled by semiautomatic weapons are rare. "I remember one case three years ago where three kids were killed in a van in Hammond. There were a lot of bullet casings at the scene," he said.

If that's the one you mean, Benchley posted it a couple of days ago, IIRC.

Actor charged with murder

SIMI VALLEY, Calif.
A veteran character actor is in jail, charged with murder and attempted murder.

Witnesses told police 74-year-old Robert Sorrells walked into a neighborhood bar in southern California and shot two people, killing one of them.

A bartender told the Los Angeles Daily News Sorrells had been at the bar until closing Friday night. He returned Saturday to look for his credit card, returned again in the afternoon and started shooting.

<snip>

Sorrells' film and T-V career dates back to the 1950s and includes a number of T-V westerns. His television credits include "Gunsmoke," "Rawhide" and "Bonanza," as well as "The Waltons," "Kung Fu" and "The Fall Guy."

7. Wilmette residents oppose BB gun ban (IL)
http://www.illinoisleader.com/news/newsview.asp?c=17955

more crackpot legislation from Wilmette, IL - Rom

WILMETTE -- About 35 Wilmette residents, including three paintball-loving teens who have already committed to join the U.S. Marine Corps, came out in support of the right to own and sell airguns last Thursday night during a meeting of the Wilmette Public Safety Committee.

Every speaker opposed a proposed ordinance that would ban airguns in Wilmette, including air rifles, air pistols, BB guns and paint ball guns.

"I think they thought they had a slam dunk here, but it turns out they didn't," said Wilmette resident Ralf Seiffe, who opposes the proposed ban and attended the committee meeting. "They got 100 percent negative comments."

*snip*

In an interview with Illinoisleader.com, Wilmette Police Chief George Carpenter said his department did not come up with the idea for an airgun ban. The village got the idea from Democrat State Senator Jeffrey Schoenberg of nearby Evanston, who has circulated a model airgun-ban ordinance to municipal officials throughout the North Shore.

*snip/more*

Sure makes it hard to counter the "Dems want to ban all guns" meme when there ARE Dems who seem to love banning ANY type of gun . .

Boy charged in acquaintance's shooting death

By WES FERGUSON

Police have charged a 16-year-old Longview boy in the shooting death of an 18-year-old acquaintance early Sunday, but they say they don't have a motive.

The boy, who is a juvenile, turned himself in Sunday night at the police station. Monday, a judge ordered him to remain in juvenile detention pending another hearing.

Police say the boy shot Tarvarus Demond Cooper once in the chest with a .38-caliber gun early Sunday inside a house at 501 Diane Drive. Two other people were in a different room at the time of the shooting, and they drove Cooper to a local hospital in their own car, police said.

Gregg County Justice of the Peace Talyna Carlson pronounced Cooper dead at 3:35 a.m. at the hospital, and said he died from a gunshot wound to the chest. His body was sent to Dallas for an autopsy, she said.

10. Pensioner Injures five in Shooting Spree Over Noise (Germany)
http://www.theherald.co.uk/news/20737.html

An apparent ethnically-motivated incident in "no mass shootings thanks to gun control" Europe - Rom

Munich- A man went on a shooting spree at a Munich apartment block yesterday in an incident that was triggered by the 66-year-old's complaints over noisy foreign neighbours and ended with five people injured, police said.

The pensioner identified only as Walter S, fired 30 shots from a rifle at about 10.45am in flats in the city's Nymphenburg district, police spokesman Andreas Ruch said. He started by firing through the doors of flats, wounding a German man in the stomach and a Slovenian man in the arm, Ruch said.

He then shot at a 54-year-old from Bosnia and his son on the staircase, shooting the younger man in the throat. The 54-year-old grabbed the rifle and ran into the street, where he was met by a policeman who shot him in the arm.

Police stormed the pensioner's flat, where they arrested the assailant. All the victims were reported to be out of danger last night.–AP

If only he had an assault weapon! Well, if Chimpy McDipstick and the GOP have their way....

"LINCOLN -- An air gun-wielding 13-year-old boy was arrested in a Manville neighborhood Saturday afternoon.
According to a police report, it was about 5:20 p.m. when Officer Michael Cavanaugh was called to 14 Church St. on a report of kids shooting BB guns at the house.
Cavanaugh said he pulled up to find about five teenagers standing in the home’s driveway. He said he got out of his cruiser and one of the children started to walk away.
Cavanaugh said he ordered the boy to stop before noticing the pistol in his hand. "I knocked the gun out of his hand, grabbed him and attempted to pat him down for any other weapons," Cavanaugh wrote in his report. "

"A Fremont boy was recovering yesterday after being shot in the right arm during a "warlike game" that went wrong.
Police said Steven Nitschke, 36, of Fremont accidentally shot the boy, Norman Morse, 12, with a .308 assault rifle he thought wasn't loaded.
The group was having a cookout and bonfire at a triplex in the 2200 block of West State Street when someone suggested playing "a warlike game," Detective Woolf said. "They decided to use real guns, and unfortunately, one was not unloaded." The detective said the bullet entered and exited the boy's right arm and entered his body again, just missing vital organs."
