Steeler's Porter Is Shot Outside Bar
"Steelers' Porter Is Shot Outside Bar

September 1, 2003 10:46 AM EDT
DENVER - By all accounts, Joey Porter was simply minding his own business. The Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker was standing outside a bar when he was shot just before 2 a.m. Sunday following the Colorado-Colorado State football game.

"He was an innocent bystander," police spokesman Sonny Jackson said. "There was no confrontation or altercation that we know of at this time."

One man was killed and five seriously injured after the shooting outside the All Sports Bar & Grill in Denver. Porter, whose injuries were not life-threatening, had gone to the bar following the football game. The All-Pro linebacker played at Colorado State."

3. "Cheap comments"? "Solutions"?
Any dumbass can make cheap comments.

That reminds me: why are there usual comments from the "pro-RKBA" crowd missing in this thread so far? You know, like "If only he had a gun, he could have defended himself!", "It's the gun grabbers' fault that he wasn't armed and couldn't defend himself!", "If he wasn't carrying a gun, he felt no duty to defend himself" etc.

Pot..

Heard of the story? Neither side of this debate can claim the high road when it comes to taking cheap shots on some of these stories.

We've both done it.

6. Sounds like another victim of the War On (some) Drugs
Just a speculation, but the incident sounds a lot like the gang warfare we see here in Cali.

I hope the assailant is caught promptly, and that Mr. Porter makes a swift and complete recovery.

7. Here is an update
DENVER -- Police said yesterday they have concluded that Steelers linebacker Joey Porter was an unlucky victim of a drive-by shooter who fired into a crowd of 150 people outside a sports bar.

A former convict and Denver street gang member, Christopher Wilford, died in the hail of gunfire at 1:47 a.m. Sunday. Porter and four others were wounded.

SNIP

Wilford, who was 28, has received most of the attention so far. He served a two-year prison term in Colorado and had a 10-year history of arrests for larceny, trespassing, drug dealing, escape and parole violations. His most recent arrest was on April 17 for drug dealing.

8. Drugs, gangs, convicted felon...
Edited on Tue Sep-02-03 11:41 AM by slackmaster
No surprises here. I'd even wager that the person who pulled the trigger was not legally eligible to possess a firearm.

:eyes:

Wake me up when they start enforcing the Gun Control Act of 1968 and actually arrest and prosecute a significant portion of the people who fail the Brady/NICS background check. The present 1% prosecution rate isn't getting the job done.

9. Good thing the gun lobby is fighting for those loopholes
to remain gaping open....you wouldn't want to make folks like this shooter risk failing a background check....
