Unarmed British Policeman Subdues Knifeman in New York
"A visiting British bobby instantly proved himself one of New York's Finest yesterday when he tackled a knife-wielding wacko who allegedly stabbed a Diamond District jewelry clerk.

Sgt. Colin Webber and his wife, Constable Claire Webber, were window-shopping for diamonds about 2 p.m. when they heard screaming and spotted a man fleeing down W. 47th St. with a bloody knife in his hand...

Colin Webber did not hesitate. He slammed his 6-foot-2 frame into the suspect, put him in a headlock and wrestled him to the ground, cops said.

"There wasn't time to think about it," said Webber, who is used to subduing suspects in England with nothing but his brawn and a wooden baton. "

Good work, fella!

Now here's what I take issue with:

Apparently he "is a cop in Leicestershire, outside London."

Bloody Americans........That's like saying "He is a cop in Los Angeles, outside Florida."

Incidentally:

"As the British lawman and Sariashvili (the suspect) wrestled on the sidewalk, the victim's friends ran over and kicked the alleged knifer in the head.

But they also landed some errant blows on the sergeant, covering his left forearm in yellow and purple bruises. As the wild crowd wailed away, Claire Webber's own cop instincts took over, and she pushed back the violent group."

Hey - shame that guns are banned in New York, otherwise maybe the victim's mates could have shot the guy and the Brit cop too? Sorry, forgetting....if guns were allowed in NY then the robbery wouldn't have happened in the first place.....

6. Well...
""Leicestershire" is pronounced "Lester"."

It's not.

It's pronounced 'Lestershire'.

'Leicester' is pronounced 'Lester' though.

Leicester is a city, Leicestershire is a county.

10. well obviously
But someone please tell me why "Leicestershire" is pronounced "Lester".

... for the same reason "Worcester" is pronounced "Wooster".

(Actually, "Leicestershire" is pronounced "Lestersher", as "Worcestershire" is pronounced "Woostersher". But it's the same reason, nonetheless.)

What I need to know is why "Wilkes-Barre" is (as I learned only last night, when the CBC broadcast a town-hall type meeting with Pennsylvania voters asking them why they will be voting as they will in the US election) pronounced "Wilksberry". That's just silly.

When I was preparing to go to England ten years ago, I mentioned to my Cambridge-educated pal that I would be going to where one grandmother is from, "Notting Ham". He tried to discreetly and gently instruct me in how I should pronounce it if I did not want to be laughed at as a provincial: "Nottingum". Yes, I said, just like my grandfather is from "Eastum". (Soccer fans will know that "West Ham" is pronounced as written, and East Ham is the same. And I knew he was right, but that shut him up!)

Google tells me that there's a Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, pronounced "Beaver Castle" ...

14. Very few things annoy me more than hearing "Notting Ham"....
I was at University in Nottingham and grew up near Birmingham (UK, not Alabama...is it Alabama?)...actually between Birmingham and Worcester, which doesn't give you foreign types even half a chance!

It they both end in an "um", rather than a "ham".

And don't get me started on whisky names.....it took many years before I had the courage to ask how Bunnahabhain was pronounced.....

Or Ireland - bloody Dun Laoghaire (Dun Leary) indeed.......

13. A US tourist at London Euston once asked my brother...
for the train to "Loogerberooga".

My bro' nearly pissed himself laughing when he realised he meant "Luffbra" (Loughborough)....

Sorry guys......

Godmanchester = Gome-ster

No wonder you guys get it wrong - I didn't know about that until recently!

Surnames - St John = "Sinjin" + there are many others that I can't be bothered to find now...

12. It is a brave thing to tackle sombody with a knife
Edited on Thu Oct-28-04 04:00 AM by downstairsparts
A guy running down bustling 47th street in the heart of the Diamond District during lunchtime might pass almost unnoticed and hardly get a raise of my eyebrows, but the flash of a knife, for me, turns my blood cold and freezes me in my tracks. You can't see the bullet in a gun, but you can see the blade on a knife.

I salute the Webbers for jumping in. I'm ashamed to admit I would have let man with knife keep on running with it.

It appears suspect was trying to pass off counterfeit junk and began furiously attacking because nobody would buy it. Sounds like American foreign policy.

Don't understand the gun part though. He was a criminal, why would he care guns were banned? On the other side, the criminal would have most likely have been simpley shot dead by someone with CCW permit. Good job though.
