My own support for firearms rights is based on the Dept. of Justice and FBI figures. Right-wingers won't use them without great selectivity because they support a couple of anti-gun points, and RWers want purity in their ideology. (Note: I do not necessarily agree with all of the FBI and DOJ conclusions myself, but at least they are fairly unbiased.)

The conclusion of the Right is inevitably "wait until the crime happens, and then apply the most severe punishment possible." I personally think we need to work on teaching our children ways to control conflict and violence. At that point, guns won't become fetish objects, and those with an interest in them will have a pre-existing gut-level respect for firearms, property, and life.
