Someone recommend a good gun safe, please.
I'm in need of a gun safe. I'm not rich, so those 1000 + dollar models are out of the question.

I have about 10 rifles and 3 handguns that need to be stored there. Is there a highly secure safe available at a price that even us working stiffs can afford? Any recommendations?

PS.. my guns are currently locked up, but I'm low on space and want something more secure against burglars than what I'm currently locking them in.

They'll be nice and safe there.

3. Your local PD
Get rid of them! If you are a hunter, join a club that has communal storage. Check the rifles(s) out in hunting season, then put them back.

4. Check out the Stack On safes and cabinets
The locking steel cabinets start at about a hundred bucks and go up from there.

I'm guessing that your guns are worth several thousand dollars so spending a thousand bucks to keep 'em safe is a pretty sensible investment IMHO.

15. Good point, but mine are all old military rifles (mostly soviet bloc)..
...so the value hasn't went through the roof yet! But, I love them as representative pieces of history. For example, I've got Mosin's with the imperial crests as well as ones with the hammer and sickle. But I agree, with you re. the investment aspect. I'm definately going to spend as much as I can afford.

5. This is what I use.
http://www.rapidalarm.com/stack-on-gun-cabinets.html

I've added an extra lock with one of those bolt on lock hasps like this

http://doityourself.com/store/u638858.htm

The stack on gun cabinets have holes in the bottom and back. I use 4 two inch screws to secure it to the floor. You can also buy additional handgun cabinets that bolt to the top. I recommend the extra lock because tubular locks are easy to pick.

6. Sentry gunsafes.

Definitely affordable.

If it's within your budget (or concerns), go for the top of the line fire rated model.

Whatever you get, just be sure and bolt the sucker down securly.

7. Try Here
http://www.agenglish.com/ has been good to friends and I in the past. Watch the shipping charges from anybody you order from.

If you are after the cabinet models, check your local big box stores and I have been told WalMart carries them too.

Another option is to fortify a closet or under stairs area. Solid door, pin the hinges, and a security system if you don't already have one. Low cost, and good for more than just firearms.

Good on you for keeping your guns and keeping them safe.

12. Closet: That's sort of what I have today.. an antique wardrobe that
I've coverted into a gun cabinet. It's always padlocked shut. thing is, it's wood and any burglar worth their proverbial salt could dissamble the wooden wardrobe in a flash with a simple pry-bar.

Thanks for the link. Checking...

8. Liberty safes are the standard.
Liberty Safe has a nice price and size range. The thicker the steel, the number of bolts, and the bolt coverage are things to consider. :hi:

9. I second the recommendation for Liberty
The $699 entry level 17 cubic foot Centurion would probably hold the collection described.

Safes are worth the money! I paid out just over $3K for mine including tax, delivery, and installation. My gun collection is worth many times that, plus I keep financial documents, some classic cameras, and a modest coin collection in the safe.

17. For the budget-minded
Edited on Sun Jan-02-05 02:17 PM by alwynsw
You can pick up a 12 gun Sentry, 5 bolt for under $400.00 at Wal Mart or upgrade a bit at Sam's Club with a Winchester for under $800.00.

Not the best in the world, but more than adequate to stop almost any thief. Bolt 'em down well. Best way is through the provided openings in the back, one side (if side openings are provided), and the bottom. Put it in a corner if possible.

Don't forget to use either a good dessicant or an electric dryer to prevent rust. Silicone-imprecnated socks are a good cheap bet to help prevent rust. (About $4.00 bucks each at Wal Mart or K-Mart.
