the crusade to ban nontraditional-looking civilian firearms dates only to the late 1980s/early 1990's, when the rantings of a few communitarian think tanks on the issue somehow got incorporated into the "New Democrat" platform...
Prior to that, it was mostly considered a state-by-state issue, with the ground rules set by NFA '34 and GCA '68.
