Israel keen on reviving road map: Shalom
Israel keen on reviving road map: Shalom Published: Sunday, 9 October, 2005, 10:47 AM Doha Time

JERUSALEM: Israel’s foreign minister expressed hope yesterday a summit next week between Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas would help resurrect the currently moribund road map peace plan.

However Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom also warned that Palestinians must first dismantle militant groups, as armed factions in the Gaza Strip issued a joint statement rejecting calls to surrender their weapons.

“However, we are not waiving the first phase of this plan, which demands the dismantlement of Palestinian terrorist organisations, including (the Islamic group) Hamas,” he said.

Shalom also claimed that weapons, including anti-tank rockets, had been smuggled across the Egyptian border into the Gaza Strip since Israel withdrew from the territory on September 12 after a 38-year occupation.
