UN official: Israel hinders human rights workers in territories
<snip>

She said she was aware of Israel's security concerns, but viewed the Palestinians' security as being "equally, if not more severely, threatened and eroded by practices of the occupation."

Even within Israel, she charged, all is not well: "Serious restrictions" are imposed on organizations that promote the rights of Israel's Arab minority, severely impeding their work.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said Israel would issue a full response once Jilani's formal report was presented, but human rights groups, in principle, are allowed to act unhindered.

"Despite a sometimes difficult security situation, these groups have been able to function effectively and freely. The issue of human rights is central to the Israeli political system. We pride ourselves on the fact that Israel's human rights safeguards are of the highest international standards," he said.

1. Hmm,
"Jilani, who visited the West Bank but not Gaza, also noted serious violations on the Palestinian side, saying human rights workers had been exposed to abuses of power, detention and corruption and had been threatened, intimidated and harmed."

Violations on the Palestinian side also? Just imagine that.
