U.S. Will Continue To Press for Expansion of Freedom in Mideast
From Rice's interview with the State Department press corps:

U.S. Will Continue To Press for Expansion of Freedom in Mideast

...Commenting on the sudden incapacitation of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Rice described Sharon as a "man who has a vision of peace for the Israeli people that is based clearly on a bedrock commitment to security, but also on a growing realization that security also has to include a better future for the Palestinian people."

Rice said the Palestinian elections scheduled for January 25 should proceed as planned. "Elections have to be held when they are expected to be held because people have a certain set of expectations about the democratic process and about the predictability of the democratic process," she said. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has threatened to postpone the elections because of Israeli obstacles to allowing Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem to vote.

Rice said that the United States has not changed its view that the Palestinian group HAMAS is a terrorist organization but it recognizes that a transition is occurring in Palestinian politics and the issue of HAMAS' participation in the elections is an internal Palestinian matter.

3. I can tell you what you could expect from experts in "Peak Oil."
1. Winning the Oil Endgame, Amory Lovins

2. The Long Emergency: Surviving the End of the Oil Age, Climate Change, and Other Converging Catastrophes of the Twenty-first Century James Howard Kunstler

3. , parallel citation

You don't need the thermodynamics, or the geology, or the history of petroleum politics, or the post-mortems on General Motors. The war in Iraq has next to nothing to do with Israel - it is the dying gasp of a petroleum based economy - striking out to steal that last drop of oil from the Iraqi people - and the arguments attributed to New American Century's (e.g., "Greater Israel" and "Bringing Democracy To The ME") wouldn't make a pimple on a real Texas Oil Man's left butt cheek.
