Labor ready to relinquish East Jerusalem areas in peace deal
Edited on Sat Jan-21-06 12:00 AM by Coastie for Truth

Senior Labor Party officials on Friday formulated the party's elections platform, which states willingness to relinquish the Arab neighborhoods of East Jerusalem under a peace deal with the Palestinians.

"Jerusalem, on all its Jewish neighborhoods, will be Israel's eternel capital," the platform states.

"This is a statement that we are willing to give up the Muslim neighborhoods of Jerusalem in order to strengthen the Jewish majority," MK Yuli Tamir said.

Labor seeks, nevertheless, to keep the holy Jewish sites in Jerusalem under Israeli control, according to the platform.

The new platform marked the first time that a mainstream party said as part of campaign that it would be willing to give up parts of Jerusalem.

1. Same story in J Post: Labor supports dividing Jerusalem

In its new campaign platform, the Labor Party supports giving up Arab neighborhoods of Jerusalem in a final deal with the Palestinians, a Labor lawmaker said Friday.

The platform, to be officially presented Sunday, will state that Labor backs a "united Jerusalem consisting of its Jewish neighborhoods," lawmaker Yuli Tamir told The Associated Press.

"This is a statement that we are willing to give up the Muslim neighborhoods of Jerusalem in order to strengthen the Jewish majority."

According to a poll published Thursday, six out of 10 Israeli Jews would be willing to give up Arab neighborhoods in east Jerusalem as part of a final peace deal with the Palestinians, but few would give up the Old City, site of Judaism's holiest shrine, the Western Wall.

3. No its meaningless
For a long time Israeli public opinion has reflected the willingness to cede even certain parts of Jerusalem.

however, these deals get killed in the details. Is Labor willing to do this without an all-encompassing peace deal? Will they cede E. Jerusalem before the PA completely dismantles terrorist orgs?

If so, they will not win many votes. If not, it is irrelevant, cause those things ain't happening.
