Quartet: Hamas must accept Israel's right to exist, disarm

Quartet: Hamas must accept Israel's right to exist, disarm

By Shmuel Rosner, Haaretz Correspondent, Haaretz Service and Agencies

Major mediating powers delivered a unified message to Hamas on Thursday that it should choose peace with Israel after its victory in the Palestian Authority elections.

In a statement, the so-called Middle East Quartet - Russia, the United
Nations, the European Union and the United States - demanded on Wednesday that Hamas, which has launched suicide bombings against Israel, renounce violence, accept the Jewish state's right to exist and disarm.

The major powers did not back up their demands with any threats, such as cutting back aid.

But U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice warned that Hamas will receive no assistance from a Bush administration that has given directly to the Palestinian Authority since Arafat's death.

3. Hypocrisy has gotten us into this mess, why not try something new?
"Ehud Olmert, the acting Israeli PM, has refused to deal with a Hamas government until the group disarms and recognises its right to exist"

This request is ludicrous until Israel unambiguously recognizes the right of the Palestinians to a state, halts its policy of assasinating Palestinian poltical leaders and disarms its own settlers and civilian population, many of whom, at least in the territories, carry machine guns and assualt rifles.

Anybody who claims that Israel has already recongized the rights of the Palestinians to a state should listen to Benjamin Netenyahu rail against the Gaza pullout.

A good post on the Bush Administration's pathetic bungling:

An even better one about Israel's respect for human rights:

10. Why are you calling her Jan?
Unless yr on friendly terms with someone, I think it's just a bit rude to pretend yr on first name terms, and at times it can appear to be just a tad intimidating. Of course, if I'm mistaken and you and the poster are on friendly terms, please ignore this...

11. VC's right. Why are you calling me "Jan?"
I don't know you from Adam/Eve, and I would appreciate it if you would refer to me as "RJnAbbysNana" or "Nana."

Furthermore, I don't know of anyone named "Jan" and do not wish to be identified as someone I am not.

Your apology would be nice!

Regards,

RJnAbbysNana
