THERE ARE AT least two potent reasons why Western powers, including the United States, should refuse to provide ongoing financial support to the Palestinian Authority when Hamas gains control of the Palestinian parliament in a few weeks.
The first is that Hamas doesn't even accept Israel's right to exist, let alone a two-state solution as a way out of the terrible mess in the Middle East.
The second is that Hamas has for years been the sponsor of terrorist attacks on "soft" targets -- innocent men, women and children going about their business in buses, cafes, shopping malls, and beaches.
Its terrorist attacks have shown a callous disregard for life. Hamas can't even rationalize its past actions by saying it was attacking "hard" targets like military posts or strategic installations.
The sole purpose of its attacks has been to create mayhem in Israel, in the hope that the Israeli state might become ungovernable and its citizens would leave the Middle East so that some of the region's original inhabitants could reclaim the lands as their own.
