Annan: New PA gov't must recognize Israel
Annan: New PA gov't must recognize Israel

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said yesterday that a Hamas-led Palestinian government must commit to non-violence, recognition of Israel and acceptance of existing peace agreements if it is to maintain its level of financial support.

Speaking for the Quartet of would-be peace-making nations after their meeting in London, Annan also said Hamas must set up a government that is committed to the rule of law, to tolerance, reform and sound fiscal management.

It was "inevitable that future assistance to any new government would be reviewed by donors against that government's commitment" to such principles, Annan said.

Shortly after Annan spoke, the Al-Arabiya satellite channel in the Middle East reported that Hamas had rejected demands to disarm and recognize Israel.

1. well sure, as soon as Israel recognizes Palestine

I love double standards.

If the PA is not a sovereign authority, who cares if they 'recognize' Israel? it's irrelevant legally. If they are a soveriegn authority, then why isn't there an equal pressure on Israel to recognize the new PA government (elected just as fairly as the Israeli government, after all)

2. They should disarm when the IDF (and criminal squatters) disarm
I'm all for that. But they should not disarm one second sooner.

5. Because they are a terrorist organization
With an official policy of destroying Israel and the murder of Jewish civilians.

They wouldn't need to disarm if they dropped those two goals.

12. Yeah, ignore all U.N. decision-making unless it's something . . . . .
Israel particularly likes. Since when has Israel co-operated with the U.N., anyway? They wanted more than anything to be a member state but don't want to abide by its rulings when they apply to Israel.

"Did you hear that, you cockroaches? It doesn't matter what we do to you, you gotta be nice to us, cause the U.N. says so. Now, lay down your arms, and we won't shoot you more than once." - Apparent Mindset of Israeli Leaders

Sheesh!!!!!

Regards,

RJnAbbysNana
