Palestinian Refugees Call on Bin Laden and al Zarqawi to Protect Islam

Palestinian refugees enraged over the publication in Europe of cartoons of the Muslim Prophet Mohammed called Friday on Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden and his lieutenant in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, to defend Islam, AFP reported.

"Punish those who have wronged Islam!" shouted Abu Sharif, head of the Sunni Muslim fundamentalist group Osbat al-Ansar to a group of more than 6,000 people assembled after Friday prayers in the Ein el-Helweh refugee camp, many of them brandishing portraits of the two Al-Qaeda leaders.

6. I am surprised that you aren't more critical of these fanatics, VC...

I am no great fan of Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories, or of the U.S. double standard toward Israel and Arabs generally, or of the U.S. occupation of Iraq, and I agree with the vast majority of you posts. I do not understand, however, why you aren't more critical of the ridiculous and dangerous over-reaction across the Muslim world to a few silly cartoons. The fact is that Muhammed has been used as a justification for slaughtering innocent civilians by religious fanatics. The connection between Muhammed and this slaughter has been created not by the bigotry of a few cartoonists, but by the perpetrators of these acts.

I wonder if you would be as offended by a cartoon lampooning Ariel Sharon's bloodthirsty behavior that had him dressed up as Moses crossing out "thou shall not kill" from the tablet of the ten commandments.

Y'know, I'm not falling for one of those Quick History Of Islam things given in what appears to be an attempt to downgrade bigotry to just 'a few silly cartoons'. Nothing excuses bigotry, just like nothing excuses torching embassies in protest. I hope I've been clear enough coz I don't understand or really want to find out more about why so many Americans not only think the Danish cartoon wasn't bigoted (I don't give a toss about the whole drawing Mohammed is blasphemy side of things, I just care about what he was drawn as), but that the Danish newspaper shouldn't have apologised and any Muslim offended should just get over themselves, and btw, look at this anti-Semitic cartoon and how dare Muslims whine about soemthing that's not bigoted when there's this anti-Semitic one that should never have been published!! You get the idea, I hope....
