Sharon turns 78, still comatose
<snip>

"Ariel Sharon, Israel's prime minister, has marked his 78th birthday still in a coma almost two months after suffering a massive stroke.

A stream of advisers, friends and government officials visited his hospital room on Sunday, praying he would wake up.

Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who took office after Sharon's stroke on 4 January, opened Sunday's Cabinet meeting with a birthday wish.

"Today is the birthday of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. We all pray for his health and wish for his speedy recovery," Olmert said.

Sharon's sudden stroke shocked Israelis, suddenly incapacitating the country's most popular politician as he appeared to be cruising toward re-election."

1. Is Franco still dead?
Maybe Ariel will be like that firefighter.

Just hang around comatose for a few years and sit up and start talking.

So we know there are at least 2 brain-dead leaders of strategic nations.

3. Oooh, you're not supposed to bring that up here....
And while we're at it, let's hear about the USS Liberty.

Sorry Mods, just a little history that should not hide under a rock forever, no matter who did it.

5. I can only surmise, but...
I mentioned the Liberty some time ago to someone who was going on about the precious fence/barrier (whatever you want to call the structure the Israelis are using to slowly starve the Palestinians) and the Mods dropped a two-ton rock on it.

There is some pretty thin skin here when it comes to Israeli atrocities.

I don't care, wrong is just wrong.

I have no particular axe to grind, either.

7. Wrong is Wrong No Matter What
I hate to see people here trying to silence such a discussion.

9. I got word from a Navy man that when it happened,
the US Navy forbid discussion of the Liberty amongst sailors.

Anyway, it was clearly an accident. The Israeli military cannot see who they are attacking. So the weather was perfectly clear, the ship had several large US flags, it was a natural mistake.

Just like when Rachel Corrie was standing in front of a threatened house with a orange flourascent jacket... natural mistake!

We should be glad that the israeli military practices such inclusive policies that even the blind can enter the military!!

11. I was the poster - I said nothing about the wall
But I did say something about
    a) Commander Lloyd Bucher's book about the loss of the Pueblo to the North Koreans in February 1968 - a screw up of Naval intelligence.

    b) "The Liberty Incident: The 1967 Attack on the U.S. Navy Spy Ship" by A. Jay Cristol - which blamed the byzantine dual command structure of the Navy's intelligence gathering ships.

    c) The loss of my Dad's plane in WW2 - where the "Intelligence Navy" never told the "Working Navy" that an intelligence gathering aircraft was missing. Dad and his crew were serendipitously spotted by another aircraft - no thanks to the "Intelligence Navy."

I learned - never trust anybody above the grade of E-4 or O-3 (as appropriate) - and especially not Chief Petty Officers or Flag Officers - in the "intelligence navy." The "working navy" can be trusted.

The USS Liberty is a fairly frequent discussion topic here. However, like all topics it must follow the posted IP guidelines. Going on memory, the reasons why a few topics discussing the USS Liberty were either locked or removed include:

- They were NOT based on a recent news or op-ed article;
- They referenced a site or other source which is considered inappropriate here on DU due to its extremely unreliable or bigoted content. Whatreallyhappened.com is one such site.
- They employed a bigoted stereotype.
- They were either were so inflammatory, uncivil, or otherwise over the top as to be considered in violation of the IP guidelines or DU's rules concerning respect and civility.
- They involved other topics besides the USS Liberty in a way which violated one of the points above.

However, I do not find any such post of yours which was removed or locked in the I/P forum so I cannot give you an answer. That said, if you have any questions or concerns, please PM myself, UndergroundRailroad or DU Administration.

12. Sharon will remain comatose until after the elections
then he will be declared to be brain dead and will be given a state funeral.

It is sad that his life ended like this.

:-(

14. It is sad. The 1950's would have been much better time for him to go.
