In its lead editorial Thursday, the Jerusalem Post said Israel, "must kill Yasser Arafat, because the world leaves us no alternative."

The Post said Arafat prevented former Palestinian prime minister Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) from combatting terror, and would not allow prime minister designate Ahmed Qurei to fare any better. "Under these circumstances, the idea of exiling Arafat is gaining currency, but the standard objection is that he will be as much or more of a problem when free to travel the world,than he is locked up in Ramallah," the Post said.

Israel should make a pre-emptive move by striking at Arafat, the Post argued. "If we are going to be condemned in any case, we might as well do it right. Arafat's death at Israel's hands would not radicalize Arab opposition to Israel; just the opposite. The current jihad against us is being fueled by the perception that Israel is blocked from taking decisive action to defend itself," the Post said.

The editorial, from the internationally-respected national daily, has co-incided with a 10 to 1 vote by the Israeli cabinet to expel Arafat. The army has been instructed to prepare plans for his expulsion.

I'm sure the Palestinians would question the idea that Israel is "blocked" from taking "decisive action." But, then, of course that depends what you mean by "decisive action." Mr. Sharon, would you care to take the witness stand?
