Police brace for riots after Haredi charged with killing son
<snip>

"Police in Jerusalem prepared for possible violent protests Monday, over their refusal to release a young ultra-Orthodox man charged with the killing of his three-month-old baby boy.

The baby, who was admitted last week to hospital in Jerusalem, died Monday, a day after he was pronounced clinically dead, the apparent victim of severe abuse at the hands of his 19-year-old father, Yisrael Vales.

Members of the ultra-Orthodox community have demanded Vales' release and threatened riots if he is kept in custody, despite the fact that he admitted to beating the child.

The ultra-Orthodox "Kol Hai" radio station quoted sources as saying that "Jerusalem would burn," if Valls was not released Monday evening."

1. very sad
but what does this have to do with I/P? Is someone going to post a link every time someone is murdered in Israel? I don't get it.

2. I think the point is the fundy nutcase kneejerk support for a
baby killing asshole and their threatened riots over his being jailed for torturing and murdering his son.

Fundies are the problem, as always, on both sides of the I/P issue.

4. I see your point
But in the US, orthodox jews could be considered "extremists" but they mostly keep to themselves, unlike xtain fundies.

5. The Haredi do not support the State of Israel
so destroying Yerusalem would suit them fine.

6. your very confused
There were a FEW orthodox who initally did not support the creation of a jewish state for "biblical law" reasons. The vast majority of orthodox support Israel. Further, destroying J-lem is the last thing any jew would want.

8. Yes about as relevant to I/P
as the "honor" killings among the Palestinians which also get posted here.

I keep both open as to me it only points out that it's the children who suffer the most.

9. Heck,
I grew up where Appalachia meets the Rust Belt (same township where the started), in the Coal Valley. And down in West Virginia they have "Honor Killings" and "Shot Gun" weddings all the time.

11. which is not very relevant.
A post like this is at best tangentially related to the I/P forum. Personally I would not accept posts about "honor" killings or any domestic violence on either side, it's just not directly relevent to the issues.

12. this is just a case...
Edited on Tue Apr-11-06 10:30 AM by pelsar
of a stuiped 19yr old father who obviously has something wrong with him...its totally irrelevant to the I/P conflict. This crosses all cultural/ethnic/religious boundries and falls into the realm of either lack of education, shallow end of the gene pool etc

what makes it worse is his cults reaction......instead of facing the problem they're pretending hes being victimized....now they are really the morons in this case...and they too with their reaction cross all cultural/ethnic/religous boundries and fall in the realm of "brainwashed cults"

13. completely agree
It's a case of domestic violence, has little to do with I/P other than he is an orthodox jew living in Israel.

14. And articles about honour killings in Israel are also irrelevent...
Or are you going to try to argue that domestic violence is only relevent to the I/P conflict when it's Arabs committing the domestic violence? I hope not...

Violet...

15. Orthodox riot over arrest
Jerusalem riots: Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox hit streets Thursday evening, attempt to block roads using burning trash cans to protest arrest of haredi man accused of killing infant; organizers: U.S. protests planned

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3239646,00.html

<snip>

"What started as street notices and local organized gatherings turned into violent protests against the arrest of Israel Asher Valas, 19, an ultra-Orthodox man accused of manslaughter over the death of his three-month-old son.

Senior Jerusalem Police District sources condemned the "wild behavior by the ultra-Orthodox and the road blockages in demand to release the suspect in the killing of his infant son."

<snip>

"Thursday evening, protestors set garbage carts on fire in the Shabbat plaza in Jerusalem and tried to block two streets. On Passover eve several hundred ultra-Orthodox demonstrated outside the police station demanding the release of the accused father.

Yehezkel Street was blocked to traffic by garbage carts that were set ablaze before police arrived at the scene. The rioters demanded the release of the father. Later, dozens of Orthodox arrived at the Shivtei Israel (Tribes of Israel) street and blocked with burning garbage cans."

16. Ultra-Orthodox rally to protest arrest of suspected baby-killer
By Haaretz Service

Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jerusalem residents demonstrated in the capital Thursday to protest the arrest of an ultra-Orthodox man suspected of killing his baby son, Israel Radio reported.

Protesters set trash cans ablaze and used them to barricade a road in the ultra-Orthodox Meah Shearim neighborhood. They also threw garbage and rocks at passing cars and screamed "Nazis" at police officers.

Five protesters were arrested.

Rabbinical sages issued a statement calling on the protesters to refrain from violence and from burning trash on the street, Israel Radio said.
