Olmert: Ahmadinejad is 'psychopath' who 'speaks like Hitler'
By Haaretz Service

Interim Prime Minister Ehud Olmert launched an unprecedented attack on Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in an interview with a German newspaper published Saturday, labelling him an anti-Semitic "psychopath" who "speaks like Hitler."

Olmert told Bild newspaper that the Iranian president "is a psychopath of the worst kind. He speaks like Hitler did of the extermination of the entire Jewish nation."

"I hope that he will never become so dangerous and destructive, like Adolf Hitler was," Olmert goes on. "I hope he never gets the chance to transfer his threats into the deeds, but if one wants to judge a statesman based on his words, I can say Ahmadinejad speaks today as Hitler spoke before the seizure of power."

The prime minister said that it was the duty of the entire world to work together to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Official anti-semitism is alive and well in 2006,

at the highest of levels,

in the land of Persia that once had a Jewish Queen,

too bad shes not still around to yet again save the Jews from annihilation .

Oh well i guess we will have to rely on the IDF , yet again.....(thankfully)

19. Kofi Annan and almost every world leader has condemned
Ahmadinejad's anti-Israel rantings. So are all these world leaders wrong in condemning his rants?
I have no idea what you mean by the second sentence.

26. That's what this is about. A regional monopoly on mushroom clouds,
or at least the threat of using them in the Middle East and South Asia.

Grow up. The U.S. has learned to live with nuclear-armed rivals for nearly sixty years. Israel will have to, as well.

An article written in the mainstream press quoting the opinion of the Prime Minister of Israel.

Intelligent analysis and comment is meant to follow , pro and con.....

Please, don't try to push-poll us.

My insinuations are not nearly as offensive as your posting Right-wing Israeli propaganda straight from the source. It's hate speech, even if it was spoken by the leader of the Knesset, quoted in a major Israeli paper.

That echoes the official statement. It says, "Iran wants to destroy Israel. Destroy Iran."

That's hate speech. That's propaganda. Please don't abuse our hospitality. Those expressions of hatred aren't welcome at DU. Goodbye and good night.

It was your editorial at the end of the OP that stimulated much of the response in this thread. The mods must be asleep tonight-- they usually put a stop to that kind of abuse. Some prominent former regulars who did that sort of thing frequently in this forum have been tomb-stoned. Using a legitimate post as a vehicle to spew vitriol and propaganda is not well respected here.

41. The Democratic Party is a big tent, remember?
There are puhhlenty of Hillary supporters on DU and both senators were elected by their Democratic Party constituents. If CT's and NY's voters tend to be too Democratic Centrists for your taste, you might want to take it up with them. They are still Democrats. Lieberman is still a member of the Democratic Party. Haaretz is a credible left source for this forum. And Olmert agreeing with most world leaders on the Iranian leader is not "right" wing... it's probably a very good summary of opinion held by world leaders.

...to enable hate speech like the editorial by the author of the OP in the name of being a big tent guy.

Haaretz is indeed a credible source for this forum, and often a source of dubious, debatable opinion-- but generally credible and generally respectable.

Olmert's comments are designed to stoke just this sort of response, IMO-- turn up the rhetoric, keep the focus on Iran, the latest MTV threat to freedom and democracy. Or something like that. It's all smoke and mirrors, meant to keep us in a ferment under that big tent. I don't buy it, but mainly I don't buy the hate speech at the end of the OP.

45. When this particular Iranian leader made comments about Israel
and that it should be wiped off the map, some, if not many, would take that as a threat and war-mongering. It's one thing if an average citizen says something like that, but when the elected leaders says it, I think it has to be taken seriously because he officially speaks for his country. At the very least, he's not even trying to be diplomatic. At worst, he means it. If another sovereign state, which happens to be the focus of the threats gets its dander up, I think it is understandable because the Iranian leader is being so outspoken. He sounds like a loose cannon. The question is: is he?

58. I don't know if "acceptable" is the right word.
But it's common, more or less in both directions, too. "Murderous pigs" is nothing special, and similar slurs are applied to Israelis and Palestinians liberally from time to time, especially if there are some recently dead people at issue, which is most of the time.

The basic rule is you are not allowed to flame other posters, directly; and people do toy with the edges of that prohibition too.

Edited on Mon May-01-06 09:42 AM by Phx_Dem
As described by Albert Bandura.

4th technique: dehumanization. You stmt below:

"your indignation notwithstanding, the IDF are still murderous pigs...."

Albert Bandura, 1990, Mechanisms of Moral Disengagement, in Walter Reich, ed. Origins of Terrorism: Psychologies, Ideologies, Theologies, States of Mind. Cambridge University Press.

16. At least he limited the Hitler comparison to the manner
in which they speak, which is bad enough. Presumably it escapes the censure of Godwin's Law.

It's certainly heads and shoulders above essentialists who unrestrictedly say "X is like Hitler," or "X is Hitler" (where X is some miscellaneous person). My usual response to that is that "Martha Stewart almost certainly uses a soup spoon like Hitler."

I personally wish Ahmadinejad would stop both dissing Israel and praising the "peaceful use of nuclear technology" in the same speech. "Peace" is truly a weasel word in some contexts.

Bringing ruin down upon Israel, Iran and the U.S.

The special relationship between the U.S. and Israel has already been ruined by the excesses of Likud and the neocons. Witness Iraq and the OSP-AIPAC spy case. Do you guys want to push it off a cliff?
