U.S. expected to abstain from UN vote on deportation of Arafat
The United States is expected to abstain from Monday's scheduled United Nations Security Council vote on a resolution to forbid Israel from deporting Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat from the territories, according to Israeli and other diplomatic sources in New York.

According to these sources, the Security Council resolution is
moderate and restrained, and includes nothing the Americans "cannot live with."

5. To kill
that murderous pile of bilge would be a mistake, to expell him is a mistake.
Either put him on trial for war crimes and let him spend the rest of his miserable life in solitary, or cut the electricity to his place in Ramalla, no calls in or out, no visitors, send in food and water 1x per wek and let him rot in his own stinky filth!

20. I notice Rini didn't answer the question...
Edited on Tue Sep-16-03 07:34 AM by Violet_Crumble
I doubt the answer would have been yes anyway, given the incredibly defensive stance I've seen her take anytime Sharon gets criticised here...

6. Aside from the fact that she's a pro-Israel fanatic...
wrote a letter to Dean complaining about his even-handed stance, and is simply a puppet of AIPAC, yah, maybe.

7. A US vote bought and paid for
When it comes to Cuba and Israel, Americans don't have a voice as to what our government should do.

CANF and AIPAC are cut from the same cloth!

9. The Security Council...
Dan Gillerman, said the Security Council has met
repeatedly to condemn Israeli actions, but
ignores Palestinian suicide bombings and
shooting attacks on Israelis.

I've seen this claim made before, but what I don't understand is seeing as how every member of the UN can take complaints to the Security Council, how many times has Israel or the US brought a complaint about suicide bombings to it? The other thing is that this current resolution is clearly concerning something that is clearly seen by the Security Council as a threat to international security, which is what the SC deals with. How are suicide bombings a threat to international security? And is condemning non-state groups like Hamas part of the role of the SC, or do they only condemn states?

11. I know
Suicide bombings don't threaten international security because Israel is law abiding.

Deporting Arafat would threaten international security because the Arab nations would all gang up on Israel.

We certainly don't want another Arab backlash. Israel has to eat the violence and be quiet. As always.

12. *woe is us....*
Suicide bombings don't threaten international security because Israel is law abiding.

How many UN resolutions and tenets of the Geneva Convention is Israel in violation of, I forget?

Deporting Arafat would threaten international security because the Arab nations would all gang up on Israel.

No shit. But, we are not talking about "deporting" are we?

We certainly don't want another Arab backlash. Israel has to eat the violence and be quiet. As always.

15. How often
How many of those resolutions are binding? Most are condemnations after the fact, or non-binding resolutions. It is just because of the attacks that Israel has to defend itself. It doesn't expect you to risk your life, although by living in New York, I can say for certainty that your life is in danger.

United Nations Security Council vote on a resolution to forbid Israel from deporting Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat

This is the wording of the article. It's exactly what is being discused. "Deporting" is in the resolution and is the actual word.

"Live by the sword" As you will, but the pen is mightier.

14. riiiiight...
For some reason all the "violence" up until the second intifada somehow always happened in Lebanon, Damascus, Cairo, etc.. I can't think of a country within Northern Africa and the Near East that Israel hasn't bombed, but somehow Israel is the victim?

16. Not sure we're on the same planet
You've just attempted to condense all of recorded history into two sentences. It's quite a challenge, and I don't think I'm up to trying to answer you at this time in the evening, to attempt to respond to this.

You seem to have blanked out on just about all of it.

17. if it's Israel under attack
why have all the wars been fought on other peoples land, in other peoples skies, and it's always Israeli bombs falling on foreign lands and very rarely the other way around.

18. One simple point
Israel's borders are still under attack. There have been terror attacks in every portion of the country going back to the early '60's. The children in Kibbutz children's houses were attacked and killed. School children on an outing in Ma'alot 1974(a small community in the north between Tzfatn and Nahariya)
http://www.yesmalot.co.il/eng/history.html#tragedy

Yet Israel's defense forces have been able to repel massive attacks. This is due in part to the committment of the soldiers. Also, being a relatively small country, sneak attacks are probably strategically impossible. Attacks have been attempted from the sea. Again, these terrorists were spotted before they landed.

21. Israel is law abiding?
Yeah, maybe if we pretend that there's no such thing as international law and the Geneva Convention is nothing but a Star Trek covention that meets in Geneva every few years ;)

Y'know, I wasn't expecting you to answer my questions because I figured you probably wouldn't have any answers, but I did expect something a little bit better than another bout of Blame The Arabs. In case it's escaped yr notice, there's a wide range of nations outside the Middle East that have spoken out against deporting Arafat...

13. US is incoherent
Colin Powell yesterday:

"The United States does not support the elimination or the exile of Mr. Arafat. I think you can anticipate that there would be rage throughout the Arab world, the Muslim world and in many other parts of the world."

So the US is opposed to the summary execution of Arafat, but will not say that in the Security Council.

Is this the "leadership" Bush was babbling about during campaign 2000?
