24. It's their problem until
- There's a full-scale war in the middle-east and we are sucked into it (think many more casualties and a Draft)
- The rest of the world is sucked into WW3
- High energy prices due to M.E. conflict will tank our economy into full-blown recession
- North Korea sees this as an opportunity to go on the offensive

We are on the brink of world chaos.

25. Sorry, but this IS WWIII.
What we have here is just another front. Remember that noone believed they were in WWII when Germany invaded Poland. Hindsight = 20/20.

How do you rationalize with two sides who both claim their "god" gave them that land? You don't.

19. ding ding ding. crap.
we knew it was coming. here it is.

fyi -- i'm in florida, next to Patrick Air Force base (need to change my screen name, i guess). there's been a lot of activity here. way out of the ordinary. PAFB has a narrow mission -- tracking the scary stuff. nuclear, etc. also does work space work. at any rate -- it's tense here.

Someone has to ask the Likud and Hamas "Is it really fucking worth it????"

I mean really - sure the endless war pays and sends money to both side's coffers, but is it REALLY fucking worth it?

I would say if they kidnapped the entire Israeli Knesset like the Israelis did to the Palestinians -- well I wonder what Bush would say then?

30. It makes no difference to Israel
I mean come on, if somebody is throwing rocks at me from my neighbor's living room, and I go over and talk to him about it, and he says "oh, that's my crazy brother. I can't get him to listen to me. Sorry", eventually I can't just keep taking that for an answer, and I have to call the cops on the guy.

Only we're talking countries, not people, so there are no cops, and rockets, not rocks (well, ok, there are rocks too), so the stakes are people's lives not their car's paint jobs. If the Lebanese government can't control its own territory, then Israel has an interest in doing *something* to get that territory under control.

I mean, if Quebecois started shooting rockets at Maine, and Ottawa said "sorry, we can't control those crazy francophones", I guarantee you we would do something.

Maybe Ahmadi-Najad had a point in his letter to *... democracy is failing around the world. People are introduced to democracy and see it produce results like in Gaza, Lebanon, Iraq, Russia, the Ukraine... what do you expect them to think about it?

15. Well, Hizbollah is doing the firing. not the government
And Hizbollah is an Iranian-funded enterprise.

This is NOT good. It's like a powderkeg and a match.

In the old Arab-Israeli scenarios of war, they were conventional efforts, with Israel owning the airspace and consequently the battlefield. New warfare tactics, which everyone is learning nowadays and are all the rage, are asymmetrical, so who knows how/if this will spread.

War without end, Amen?

31. The Taliban didn't attack us, either, they just let OBL live there
Eventually, if people are carrying out attacks from your territory, and you don't do anything about it, you end up paying the price for it.

I'm not saying that's just, or right, or fair, or even a good idea, I just mean that countries will do what they have to do to keep their territory safe. Israel is having its soldiers captured and rockets fired on its territory (though until now Hezbollah has been focusing on that one little strip that they say is actually Lebanese and the UN says is Syrian and Israel controls). If Lebanon says it condemns the rocketing of Israel or incursions into Israel to capture their soldiers, they need to get control over their own territory.

not those handmade rockets scotched taped together that the Palistians have. I wonder if any Israeli people are happy with the foolhardy games their government is playing. Probably as happy as many here are happy with the BushCo cowboy games.

I made this mistake earlier posting too, rockets are coming from the land mass (country) called Lebanon, NOT from the government (country) Lebanon.

33. So if Rockets hit NY coming from Quebec...
... and the Quebecois crossed the lake and captured two national guard soldiers, and Ottawa said they couldn't control those Quebecois, it would be wrong for the US to stop the rocket attacks, with force if neccessary?

Hell, let's even make the situation more comparable: say it was a Native American group in Quebec, the Iroquois or something, who wanted their land back. They've got as much beef with us as the Palestinians and Lebanese have with Israel, if not more. And they set up shop in Quebec and were firing rockets into New York State and kidnapped two soldiers. If the Canadian government couldn't get the militants under control, what would you suggest the US do?

43. OK, what were you saying then?
All I meant was that to the country being rocketed from another sovereign's territory, it matters very little whether those rockets are being fired with that government's authorization or not, if that government is incapable (or unwilling) of stopping them.

34. no offense but you still haven't
much of a grasp of the situation- and that's understandable. It's more involved than the simple statement that the rockets are coming from the land mass known as Lebanon. H'zbollah is part of the gov't. They have twenty three seats in Parliament, and a couple of ministry positions. The Lebanese army does not control its border with Israel; H'zbollah does.

22. I don't think this will help at all
It won't help in teh war of public opinion. They should've responded by fighting the IDF directly.

Sure Israel is bombing and killing civilians in Beirut and elsewhere, but tit-for-tat revenge upon civilians will just cause escalation.
